This was to be their crowning glory, the castle to end all castles. The result was a fortress of immense size and near-perfect symmetry. No fewer than four concentric rings of formidable defences included a water-filled moat with its very own dock. The outer walls alone bristled with 300 arrow loops. The south gatehouse and the six great towers in the inner ward never reached their intended height. The Llanfaes gate was barely started before being abandoned. So the distinctive squat shape of Beaumaris tells of a dream that never quite came true. Still it takes its rightful place on the global stage as part of the Castles and Town Walls of Edward I World Heritage Site. Gloriously incomplete Beaumaris is perhaps the supreme achievement of the greatest military architect of the age. In 1935 he was appointed Assistant Inspector to the Office of Works, and in 1946 Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Wales, Assistant Chief Inspector in 1954, and Chief Inspector in 1961 (to 1972). He was invited to prepare two paper guides to two prehistoric sites in Wales: He had conducted excavations at Pentre-ifan. Wilfrid J. Hemp had conducted work at Capel Garmon. He collaborated with (Sir) Charles Reed Peers on the guidebook for Harlech Castle (1927). He then prepared a short guide to the burial chamber at Bryn Celli Ddu (1935) on Anglesey The first is my biography of Dr Winifred Lamb, Honorary Keeper at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The second is a study on the development of guidebooks in England and Wales. These two areas merge as a young Ralegh Radford was taken round north-western Greece in the hunt for a suitable prehistoric site to excavate. They both joined William Heurtley’s excavation at Saratse in Macedonia.Radford also assisted (Sir) Charles Reed Peers with the publications of the excavations at Whitby Abbey. Radford then worked with Wilfrid James Hemp on the guidebook for Denbigh Castle (1932) in North Wales. Hemp had been appointed Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Wales in the Ministry of Public Works and Secretary to the Board of Ancient Monuments in 1913 ( Dictionary of Welsh Biography ). He had become Secretary to the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments in Wales and Monmouthshire in 1928. He was then responsible for a series of guides in Wales: Ogmore Castle (1933), White Castle (1934), Dolwyddelan Castle (1934) and Kidwelly Castle (1935); Cymmer (Cymer) Abbey (1934), St David’s Bishop’s Palace (1934) and Strata Florida (1936). He also prepared the National Trust guidebook for the Roman Site at Segontium (1936).

Perhaps of note are his studies on inscribed stones: Margam (1949), Pillar of Eliseg (1953), Kirkmadine (1953), and The Sandbach Crosses (1956). She has been interviewed about her new role as Chief Executive of CADW for the Winter number of Heritage in Wales (Issue 59).Professor Kate Clark He seems to have been working on the reconstruction of the Roman town of Caerwent in the 1930s. This reconstruction, finished in 1937, was provided by the National Museum of Wales. It was clearly felt that providing a reconstruction for the settlement would help visitors to visualise the site where little was to be seen except for the substantial walls and the insula on Pound Lane. By this point remains of the forum-basilica and a nearby temple had been opened to the public, as well as a courtyard house in the western part of the settlement. The colour reconstruction of the town was included in the CADW guide although it notes: Nevertheless, Sorrell’s work still conveys well enough an impression of Caerwent as it may have appeared in the fourth century. My 1972 copy is a 9th impression (with amendments). There is also a three page summary in Welsh at the end (pp. 42-44). The guide has is “Prepared by the Department of the Environment on behalf of the Welsh Office”. Many have sites plans. Notice the sublte change of title to Ancient Monuments in anglesey.A The sub-title of the volume is A Guide to Ancient and Historic Sites on the Isle of Anglesey. My own interest in Ralegh Radford is that he was taken around north-western Greece by Winifred Lamb during the inter-war years.Tretower was open all year round from 9.30 am (2 pm on Sundays) until 7 pm from May to September. The sections are History (3-5), Periods of Construction (6-7), and Description (8-15). There is no plan. The sections are History (1-3, 6), and Description (6-10). This has a fold out tour of the Court and Castle (pp. 5-8). Please improve this by adding secondary or tertiary sources.

In spite of this, its sheer size and beautifully symmetrical design remains awe-inspiring to the modern day, with over 700 years of history to explore. Intended to be the largest and most magnificent of the group, by the 1320s construction on the eminent site had ceased. Lack of funding and trouble in Scotland had diverted attention away from Beaumaris, sealing its fate as an unfinished masterpiece.

In 1403 it was besieged and captured by Prince of Wales Owain Glyndwr in a rebellion against English rule, before 2 years later being retaken by the English in 1405. In 1646 Royalist forces were forced to relinquish it to the Parliamentarian army however, and while it was briefly recaptured in a 1648 revolt, it would soon return into the hands of the Roundheads. The Parliamentarians instead garrisoned the castle, saving it from substantial destruction, yet following the Restoration of 1660 it was left to fall into ruin. A vast moat surrounds half of the castle’s outer wall comprising of 12 towers and 2 gatehouses, while the inner ward is made up of a further 6 large towers and 2 D-shaped gatehouses. The nearest train station is Bangor, 9 miles away, while a number of bus services run to the nearby area. The closest stop is the Bakery stop in Beaumaris, a 5-minute walk away. This work was a commission from Cadw. The inspiration for this proposal came from a number of sources including our research and visits to the castle and surrounding landscape; the experience of seeing a range of mediaeval stained glass, buildings and artefacts in North Wales; working on a similar interpretive stained glass project for the Royal Chapel at Conwy Castle and the growth in our interest, experience and approach to this type of project. It draws inspiration from the forms and motifs of mediaeval glass in conjunction with contemporary glass approaches and techniques in order to reference the particular history and legacy of Edward 1 st in Wales. The patterns and colours reference medieval manuscripts, musical notation, coinage, heraldry and the marks of the masons who built the castle. We used them in broad strokes to give a sense of modernity. Built for Edward I, by Master James of St George, Conwy Castle is amongst the finest surviving medieval fortifications in Britain. Along with Harlech Castle, Caernarfon Castle and Beaumaris Castle, this monument has been part of the Castles and Town Walls of Edward 1 World Heritage Site since 1986. It was the last of the royal strongholds created by Edward I in Wales. This was to be their crowning glory, the castle to end all castles. They even included 300 arrow loopholes. A lot of the walls never reached their full height but they are there and even now they are still relatively high. There are so few castles still with water in their moat, it is lovely to see and very picturesque. You can walk around half of the outer wall.

There are some lovely views looking down to the moat and across to the countryside. If you head to the far end and go up the right-hand steps you can explore the interior rooms and corridors. There’s even a small chapel with stained glass windows. This one is accessed via the top left corner in the picture below. It goes a lot higher than the outer walls. In the centre is an incomplete or possibly ruined building where you can look in some rooms (with no roof). Reviews do not mention all of these changes or possible price changes. Most places now require you to pre-book online in advance. You can walk the walls and explore a few remaining rooms and corridors. There are no toilets but there are some public toilets nearby.
