I love my original Bushnell Yardage Pro Compact 600 and have never had a problem with it but I've had it for 11 years and the ARC feature wasn't available at that time. I hunt primarily with a bow and the ARC feature is why I bought the Scout 1000. I feel that it will be a great addition for my hunting from a tree stand. Taking the guess work out of angled shots will be great for my confidence when the shot presents itself. Bushnell makes a great rangefinder and the Scout 1000 appears to be well made and works as described. The only things that I would complain about is that I wear glasses and the lens is set too far away from my eye to get a full field of view with them on, so I either have to remove my glasses or be content with only seeing a small center view. However, I can see what I need to and can work around that. It is a little frustrating that the operating manual says to fold the eyepiece down for glasses wearers but it doesn't have a fold down eye piece on the unit, I'm not sure what they are talking about there. The ARC feature in this unit is only good for 60 degrees angle up or down where as the Legend 1200 and some other units on the market are good to 89 or even a full 90 degrees. I wasn't aware of that when I bought it otherwise I may have spent the extra dollars for the 1200. However, I don't foresee a need for any shots at angles steeper than 60 degrees but you never know for sure where the animal will present itself, the extra angle of the 1200 would be worth the difference in price if you expect shots nearly straight up or down. The lens of the Scout 1000 are coated with Raingard which will also be a nice addition in foul weather. I Iike the range finder, but I wish the cross hairs and the letters would light up in a different color then black. A little hard to see in low light or with dark back drops. Everything else is great. While I haven't actually used this on a hunt yet I have used it extensively setting up targets and practicing with it.
It appears to be very easy to use, accurate and fast. The ballistics table showing bullet drop really saves me a lot of time, and the shoot for reading in bow hunting mode is fantastic. Now if they could just figure out how to make it do windage also. Won't range through blind shoot through mesh, old Nikon would. During a recent hunt had some very lite fog would not give a yardage. On occasion in brush mode in the fog would get a reading but it was not accurate. Ok for medium range precision rifle. I bought this for 2 functions, 1st to use with recreational field archery and 2nd to range targets for medium range precision shooting. Providing the angle and true horizontal distances is essential to help connect with your target and aids in the prevention of lost arrows; ). The 6x is decent magnification for checking your grouping (when using it archery) as far as 90 yards on a clear day. Be sure to adjust the eye piece to get the clearest picture. The glass resolution is overall a bit low but for the price range it's on par with other rangefinders. You can get a rangefinder with higher resolution glass but expect to pay 5 or 6 times what you will pay for this little tool. One unadvertised feature is that this rangefinder has a standard tripod threaded mounting point at the bottom of this unit. Time will tell how the battery life will be. Verisign. This range finder has many of the same features as higher end range finders, as it has the ability to provide angle compensation and ranging capability out to a maximum claimed 1000 yards (on very reflective targets). Available in 2 colour choices, black and camouflage, when you put your hands on the Bushnell range finder, you notice that the exterior is constructed of a soft rubber which quickly feels comfortable in your hand. This provides a easy grip surface in all weather conditions, they have provided a lanyard attachment point, along with a tripod mount for added stability. Bushnell states the unit is fully waterproof, although there is no reference provided to what depth. Weather resistant may be more of an accurate description. Like most of the competition Bushnell states the maximum range is 1000 yards, based on highly reflective targets.

The manufacturer states the Bushnell Scout 1000 will range hard objects such as trees to 650 yards, and soft target such as deer or game to 325 yards. As it says in the owner’s manual the maximum distance for most objects is 650 yards. You make the call, what we found in our test is a bit different. This being the case I wonder how it would perform in the rain. It actually has a rain setting. Although we did not field test this function. In a nutshell if you are shooting up or down the range finder will calculate the actual distance to the target. The user can select to display the bullet drop in inches or centimetres, MOA or MIL. There are 8 identifiable bullet ballistic groups. No angle compensation. This allows the user to make adjustments to the shot based on individual ballistic calculations. Unlike many of its competitors who have created a colored display, for reasons unknown to me, Bushnell has opted for keep a black LCD display. It was difficult to say the least and more than a little frustrating to range dark objects in low light conditions, nearly impossible is a more accurate description. If you plan on using your rangefinder in low light or dark conditions it would be highly suggested that you consider another model. As I have learned through multiple reviews, black is not the ideal choice for any range finder reticule display. This mode setting allows the user to set the range finder to range objects furthest in the distance, so if you’re ranging through brush, trees or grass, this will greatly assist in preventing false readings. Searching around for other reviews on this product, I found many people that have made comments about the battery not lasting, or the unit just stopped working, many reviews say it never worked right out of the box. I didn’t experience any of this myself however there are plenty of reviews with similar complaints.
In this regard some internet search’s will show many people who have complained about the customer service they received. Just another factor to consider prior to purchasing this model. Based on its poor low light capability, accompanied by its inability to range anywhere close to claimed distances in our opinion you are better off to spend a little more money to get a product that will do all things well. Unless your plan is to use this range finder on sunny days, specifically on a golf course then choose this model. If you think you will be doing anything other than that, consider another model. The different modes for bows and guns are super cool. Before the lovefest (see below) I will start with the semi negative things I would have liked to know before buying: A few caveats: 1. I wear both glasses and contacts and it works well with each, but I definitely prefer putting it all the way up to my eye with or without contacts. There is a much larger field of view that way. Glasses wearers, be aware of that. 2.
I can't quite figure out the design of the neckstrap. Hooking it up to the unit is like any other lanyard, but the head hole itself has another two loop design, and I can't find anything about it online. Small gripe; I may just be stupid, and I can still use the strap. 3. It only gives readouts in whole yards. I have seen other range finders that give it to tenths of yards. This doesn't make a difference to me, but I was expecting the decimal. 4. The 1000 yard range is somewhat optimistic. Bow mode only goes out to 99 yards (understandably). However, to get a range beyond 800 yards in the other modes, the target must be highly reflective. In central and eastern Kentucky, we don't have many 1000 yard patches of flat space around, so it isn't a big deal, but again I would like to know that. The gun mode accounts for distance, angle and the type of bullet you are shooting. There is a list available on the disk in the box with the rangefinder where you find the exact round you are firing, including brand, caliber, type, and grain and it tells you which preset it corresponds to (A-J). This includes muzzleloader settings as well. There are thousands of rounds available on this list. If you buy your ammo at a sporting goods store or department, you can find it on the list. There is also a regular mode without any angle readout, but aren't you buying the ARC version of the scout for a reason?:) Additionally, you can toggle between two settings where you can scan across an area, and the Scout will only range the farthest object you hit or the closest. Example: there is a deer you can see through a tree branch, but you cannot get the sight only on the deer and keep hitting the tree--in this mode you just scan along the body of the deer and although your laser also hits the tree branch, the Scout knows only to give you the range of the farthest object.
Conversely, at a distance if you see a deer in front of a backdrop of trees or land, but the deer is too small to keep the aim on, you can scan on the deer and even if you slip off of it, only the range of the closest object (the deer) will be reported. The optics are very clear. The 5x magnification is a good distance, and the focus control works nicely. The ranging works even better in low light than in brighter conditions. You can easily switch to meters (and centimeters in bullet drop) for all the metric fans out there. I grew up using yards, so despite the logic of the metric system, I keep using it when shooting.Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2016 This finder is advertised to range out to 1000 yards. It does NOT. I have yet to get a reading on distances for greater than 400 yards during mid day hours; even when mounted in a stationary position. At dawn and dusk it does a little better, but not much. Unfortunately I did not find this out until the one-year Bushnell guaranty period ended. I contacted Bushnell to see if there was any thing that they could do to help me out. They recommended that I sell the unit on Craig's list. WTF? They then offered to sell me a unit of my choice at 30 off the MSRP. Read that as the same price that they sell their stuff for on Amazon. No more Bushnell product for me. Please try again later.
