0 out of 5 stars Reading through a few of these chapters helped me gain some confidence and get me started. Each chapter contains some tips for a specific type of job search letter you may have to write, followed by a few good examples. The tips include what to do and what NOT to do. What I like about this book better than a lot of others out there is that it addresses issues of today's job seeker. Most cover letter books from even 5-7 years ago fail to mention how to write a cover letter that must be submitted online. It includes specific topics you may have to address in the cover letter, and typical situations you may face after submitting your materials. I agree with the other reviewer in that this book is geared toward British job applicants. I'm in the US and cover letters I've read here are a little different, and not just when it comes to spelling. If you're not planning to work in the UK, you might want to supplement this book with some cover letters you find online. For job seekers who have never written a cover letter, this book discusses all the basics and supplies many examples of appropriate formats and styles. A lot of the writing tips in The Cover Letter Book can be applied to most professional communication. Some chapters tackle the best way to handle follow-up letters to applications and thank you letters to interviewers. It's useful to know how to write acceptance and rejection letters with equal grace. The book is also helpful with up-to-date information regarding correspondence style and proper email etiquette. While The Cover Letter Book is full of good advice, American readers should take note that the book was originally written for a British audience. Even if a few pages are devoted to the difference between American and British English, a careless reader may not notice this section. American job seekers should not slavishly copy the sample letters without making the proper adjustments.

(This review first appeared on the San Francisco Book Review website.)I wasn't expecting Innes to still be interested in the written letters and communication of the job application plan in this day and age where everything seems to be done on-line or on a text. I am however, completely convinced by the need for really well-written letters to set us up before the interview and how they enhance the qualities we so much want the organisations we apply to to appreciate. Of course, Innes also deals with online applications and social media, but emphasises that whatever we wrote we must write it well. Very insightful and impeccably laid out as expected with a 100 practical approach providing loads of examples and cases studies. Great.I skipped through pages and found useful suggestions that were a lot better than what I had been writing. So with my letter completed I emailed it off together with my cv and the same day I got a phone call asking me to go in for an interview. I thought I knew how to write a covering letter but there's always room for improvement, so this book is worth spending on.This book had some great examples on how you can add value to your application by creating a great cover letter. Almost enticing the recruiter to read your CV in the first place if you like. I understand that there are sooooo many applicants for each job vacancy nowadays that I decided I needed all the help I could get. It really fits the bill thank you five stars from me!This book will help you. James gives clear and helpful advice on how to write your cover letter, support your CV and sell your skills and experience.
