I figure the exact parameters of the knobs would best be described by the Boss manual here. The PQ-4 for me is kind of a little preamp. I use it into old amps that may only have a low and high knob. The presence knob being around 8k and up makes it really nice for cutting the hiss from my fuzz or string clang out of the sound. The low knob it would be nice to have a parametric control for the low lows instead of the low just being 100hz and lower. It's nice for adding a huge bassy bottom end though it reaches too far into the low mids for it to be anything other than making it a boom knob. The high and low mids knobs are very sensitive. The high mid in particular. They cover such a range of frequencies that just a touch can changes the whole sound of what your boosting. Be Very Delecate with the levels of the mids knobs. With the amount of volume and size of the Q you can actually get some pretty odd tones that near a stuck wah sound. Over all next to no noise in the background unless you crank the presence knob. These are a little pricy but a nice pedal to just help an old amp out without taking a big preamp with you.

Solid pedals, of course I prefer the bass version because the low knob is parametric too unlike on the PQ-4. Other than the mojo factor, they're average parametric EQs, still cheaper than the WMD Utility or Empress but not as rich in tone or features.For the size, cost and construction of bosses, you can't go wrong. I tried this pedal at practice yesterday. It does as advertised. I like that the mid and high knobs cross each other. With this mod we replace the cheaper noisy op-amp chips with low noise higher quality chips. Lower quality capacitors are also replaced reducing noise even more and also adding a more focused Hi-Fi tone to the circuit. Noise is substantially reduced and the signal is passed through preserving the original tone of your guitar.
You'll be shocked at the improvement this mod will make on this. I am unsure if there are different versions of this circuit so before you order make sure your pcb looks like this. It’s just the nature of Electrolytic caps. Sometimes the leaking is actually visible. But Electrolytic caps can look okay and still be faulty. By replacing Electrolytic caps in older pedals you can actually improve the overall effect of that pedal. Honestly I was skeptical until I received an email from a client that was having issues after he modded his Boss BF-2 with one of my kits. He said the flange effect was barely noticeable. A couple of weeks later I received another email from the same client. The client said he had solved the issue by replacing all the Electrolytic caps in his BF-2. This peaked my interest so I started experimenting. I was astonished how some of my older pedals benefited from the cap upgrade. Noise seemed to be reduced and clarity and presence of the effect were enhanced. I am now offering these Cap Upgrade Kits for many of the pedals I offer kits for. In some cases some of these caps are already upgraded in the kits that I offer. But I am offering kits that replace all the Electrolytic caps for those that have not purchased my kits. They will benefit from upgrading the Electrolytic caps that I do not replace in my kits. You’ll find that some of these same caps are already replaced in the kits I offer. It’s a win win all around for those that want the maximum benefit when upgrading their pedals. But I didn’t stop there, when possible I have upgraded these Electrolytics with Metal Film and Tantalum.
