Had I to do it over again I'd skip the OD-20 and shoot for the GT-10B. A hundred times the pedal for four times the price.It is great in front of a tube amp to give tons of distortion variety, from SRV tube-screaming to Scholz's Rockman to Hendrix Fuzz and Satch sustain. If you don't want to take 15 pedals to a gig, this is a great alternative!I found that at least four of the key sounds from this pedal where foundational. That is, those four sounds will get me a lot of mileage and are not once-in-while special effects. So, for me this is four pedals in the space of two and about the price of two, and that's a bargain. From there, all the extra sounds are the occasional special effects that are the cherries on top. The controls are logical and provide a fair amount of flexibility. In some cases, the controls give you more variations then are available on the corresponding single-size pedal (a juicy benefit). In other cases, like that of the MT-2, the mid-range controls aren't there, so middle boost or scooping is less tweak-able (a minor inconvenience). So, this would be the second improvement I would ask for from BOSS: a middle control (perhaps both level and frequency, please). As for the quality of the tone.If you are a boutique-pedal junkie, then this won't be your main sound, but it might be all those others that you need to fill in the holes.Any minor differences that you perceive - or more likely think you perceive - can be tweaked with your EQ. In those cases you have to tweak things properly and use your brain a bit to get a dead-on reproduction of those pedals - but it is by no means difficult to do and if you understand how to use tone controls properly you can do it in seconds. I don't know why Boss can develop and manufacture sophisticated digital signal processing models such as found in the OD-20, but still can't manage to put a simple, cheap, true bypass circuit in their pedals.

I suspect it's because Boss makes a separate line switching pedal (the LS-2 Line Selector) that they don't want to make semi-obsolete by putting true bypass in their other pedals. For that reason, I don't want to give this thing a full 5 stars but think it deserves better than 4 stars, so I'm rounding up to 5 because there's no 4.5 stars option here. If you play a fair bit with the pedal disengaged and are really picky about your tone, then you'll want to get a line switcher so you can truly bypass the OD-20 when you're not using it. Other than that, this pedal is a stompbox dream - it really does have accurate models of all those pedals in one box. With the Attack Shape control, you can easily adjust the response of this distortion guitar pedal according to your playing style. Moreover, you can conveniently store your customized settings with the 4-user memory of this Boss guitar pedal. It was quite a treat to play thru all the vintage overdrive and distortion tones of years past and to tweak several of them to a even deeper levels of fat or thin tones. All tone and selection knobs worked flawlessly. No annoying noises. I feel fortunate to have track down a dual pedal in such good shape (I had been searching for over a year) both in looks and functionality (all mint close to brand new). It came in original box with appropriate serial numbers and manual. The thing is--the price was right in line with today's going price for used BOSS OD 20. Though BOSS sold it as a thing that would give you all or most of their distortion and overdrive pedals in one, I find the OD-20 doesn't really emulate them very well. The original version of those pedals sound better to my ears. It failed at those things so was discontinued. What the OD-20 does really well, at least mine, is emulate Fuzz Face, Octave Fuzz, Big Muff and Rat very well. In other words this box is best used for wild distortion, fuzz and octave effects. A low octave boost pot adds heavy depth on tap. There's a BOSS MT-2 emulation that also rocks. Switching between them is not the most elegant, I don't recommend it if you're trying to switch between 2 sounds back and forth quickly. But if you set your amp at a warm clean sound, you can go from that to wild mad fuzz in a stomp. Add an overdrive pedal for something in between or use a clean and an overdrive channel in your amp. Did I mention the OD-20 can also switch your amp's channels for you. Great if you don't have the original switch for your two channel amp. It's sturdy and reliable, it's a tank. Non stop fuzz face and big muff emulation.

Pretty straight forward other than the programing and even that wasn't too bad once you play with it a little and get use to it. Very versatile and sounds great. Shipped right away and came on time. I dig it I'm sure you will too. I do suggest getting a power cord (about 10 bucks) or expect to use a lot of batteries. Good choice for beginners. It doesn't state anywhere that this pedal is true-bypass, but my opinion is that it's true, since I can't hear a difference in the core sound whether it's connected or not.The amplifier section is intended to use straight into the mixing console, and this works - but there is better amp emulators around. Boss own pedals emulated are very good - I can't tell no difference, this fact alone make's it a reason for buying this instead of a DS-1 and a OD-2 for instance. The emulation of Ibanez tubescreamer is also great. Pro-Co's Rat is close but I think the original sounds a little bit warmer.It feels reliable, sturdy and it's good-sounding.For this price, You get so much distorsion that You can simulate nearly every tone possible. There are'nt any particular drawbacks with this unit, except for those listed below.

First introduced in 1989 by IVL Technologies, the now ubiquitous Whammy was a gamechanger in the stompbox world. A simple pitch-shifter controlled by an integrated expression pedal, this revolutionary metal box introduced guitarists to a new world of strange and esoteric guitar playing. With only this dirty dozen ever existing, they’re extremely rare and if you were to stumble across this particular rodent, you should immediately escort it to the Natural History Museum. This model is commonly known as the Whiteface RAT. The Tone Bender was originally designed and made by guitar technician Gary Hurst, who had previously worked for Vox and later for the Macari brothers. Legend has it that session ace Vic Flick (of James Bond theme fame) came into the Macari’s shop complaining his Maestro Fuzz-Tone lacked the sustain he needed, so Hurst offered to build him something better. By taking the Fuzz-Tone circuit and beefing up the voltage from three to nine volts, the result gave Flick the singing sustain he wanted.It has been through many iterations, and made under many brand names, including Sola Sound, Colorsound, JMI, Vox and Marshall (as the Supa Fuzz), but whatever the name, it remains a quintessential fuzz. Boss has continued to update the CE series and in 2016, debuted a modernised CE-2 in its high-end WAZA Craft range.

Line 6 had only been around for three years, and had enjoyed considerable success thanks to its revolutionary POD amp-modelling unit, but the four-switch Stompbox Modeler range represented a concerted effort to invade the pedalboards of serious musicians. While the MM4 Modulation Modeler and FM4 Filter Modeler have their fans, the DL4 Delay Modeler became an unprecedented hit, and it wasn’t long before seemingly every guitarist on the planet had this big green box on their pedalboards. Some went even further, basing their entire sound on the DL4’s widescreen atmospheric capabilities and seemingly endless well of inspiration. There’s also the oft-forgotten looper function, which allows you to sample, reverse and slow down your repeats as needed. More accurate and versatile units have followed, but there’s something about the way the DL4 works that is enduring, and uniquely inspirational. This probably wasn’t what Bill Finnegan envisioned when he had the ingenious idea to use a high-fidelity, low-noise preamp in an overdrive pedal back in 1990. The result was the Klon Centaur: a wonderful overdrive and boost that offers a widescreen frequency range and addictive touch responsiveness. The scarcity of supply (8,000 or so were produced between 1994 and the end of production in 2000) meant that they soon began to skyrocket on the used market. If you can afford it and can find one, you won’t want to switch it off. This was done by cascading the circuit into additional sections, each one clipped by twin diodes. However, when you clip, the tone can be a bit raspy.The BBD chips were responsible for achieving an analogue warmth and tape-like echo that guitarists fell for, but Electro-Harmonix didn’t stop there.
