Earth scientists investigate the history of our extraordinary planet in order to understand our present and build for our future.

Employers appreciate earth science graduates for their: Some continue to PhDs and careers in research, whether at UiB’s centres of excellence in climate studies and petroleum research, or elsewhere. I wasn't aware of the fact that I would get my own desk, but I think that was really great! The programme is taught in English. Instead, staff in the department will help you decide on the right courses, based on your chosen thesis topic, and your previous academic background. This course list is tailored to your needs, so that you begin your thesis with the right knowledge and skills. As well as courses in relevant earth science topics, some students may also need to attend training in Foundations of Computer Programming before beginning work on their thesis. Others may attend Field Training before undergoing fieldwork. Every year, we reserve 5 places for qualified international students, and the field work you conduct as part of the programme will take you to many interesting places within and beyond Norway. Most courses will have mandatory learning activities, but we encourage you to also attend non-mandatory activities, where you will learn extracurricular material which can be helpful during your exams. Together with other master’s students and researchers, you will take part in field trips lasting from 2 to 4 weeks (your costs are paid by the university). Master’s students are seen as important, active contributors to the department’s research groups, and at UiB you will have the opportunity to get involved in truly cutting-edge earth science. The department has access to two ocean-going research vessels equipped for marine reflection seismics, and you will have access to a wide range of up to date laboratory and computer facilities. Your interests and previous academic background will be considered when finding a thesis topic that is right for you.

The department also has close ties with UiB's two national centres of excellence in climate studies and petroleum research, which provide additional opportunities for master’s projects. You will learn to: Masters students can also choose to attend single courses on Svalbard or stay there for summer courses. Your fieldwork might take you to one or more of. Students may select courses exclusively in one focus or can combine courses from both focuses to create their individual, integrated curriculum. To do so may require extra planning to ensure eligibility for courses. You find the course codes at this page. Impact on earth processes leads to substantial changes in the environment. You will develop awareness and in-depth knowledge of environmental changes over years to millennia in different types of environments. You also develop the ability to handle complex phenomena, problems and situations, as a preparation for research practice or other jobs that have high demands of independence. As first courses you take Aquatic Ecosystem and Aquatic Biogeochemistry. These courses are then followed by Analysis of Field Data and Analysis of Environmental Change. In addition, choose freely among our courses at advanced level, provided that your choice meets the qualification requirements for the Master's degree. The teaching is conducted in close collaboration with on-going research at our department. All teaching is in English. Nearly all information in the book is built around 2,600 photographs and stunning illustrations, rather than being in long blocks of text that are not articulated with figures. These annotated illustrations help students visualize geologic processes and concepts, and are suited to the way most instructors already teach. To alleviate cognitive load and help students focus on one important geologic process or concept at a time, the book consists entirely of two-page spreads organized into 20 chapters. Each two-page spread is a self-contained block of information about a specific topic, emphasizing geologic concepts, processes, features, and approaches. These spreads help students learn and organize geologic knowledge in a new and exciting way. Inquiry is embedded throughout the book, modeling how scientists investigate problems. The title of each two-page spread and topic heading is a question intended to get readers to think about the topic and become interested and motivated to explore the two-page spread for answers. Each chapter is a learning cycle, which begins with a visually engaging two-page spread about a compelling geologic issue. Each chapter ends with an Investigation that challenges students with a problem associated with a virtual place. The world-class media, spectacular presentations, and assessments are all tightly articulated with the textbook.

This book is designed to encourage students to observe, interpret, think critically, and engage in authentic inquiry, and is highly acclaimed by reviewers, instructors, and students.Nearly all information in the book is built around 2,600 photographs and stunning illustrations, rather than being in long blocks of text that are not articulated with figures. He has directed the geologic framework and mapping program of the Arizona Geological Survey, completing a new Geologic Map of Arizona. As a National Association of Geoscience Teachers distinguished speaker, he has traveled across the country presenting talks and workshops on how to infuse active learning and inquiry into large introductory geology classes. He is a commonly invited speaker to national workshops and symposia on active learning, visualization, and teaching. Dr. Reynolds is the author of the highly successful Exploring Geology. Dr. Johnson is a full-time faculty member in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University (ASU), where she teaches Introduction to Geology to nearly 1,000 students a year and supervises the associated introductory geology labs.

She also coordinates the introductory geology teaching efforts of the School of Earth and Space Exploration, helping other instructors incorporate active learning and inquiry into large lecture classes. The main focus of her geoscience education research is on student- and instructor-generated sketches for learning, teaching, and assessment in college geology classes. Before coming to ASU, she conducted groundwater studies of copper deposits and taught full time in the Maricopa County Community College District, teaching physical geology and environmental geology. By connecting them to the beauty of geological history, the amazing landforms around the globe, the nature of the sea and air, and the newest discoveries about our universe, it gives students an opportunity to relate to their everyday world. Students will explore topics such as: This unit introduces the surface of our earth. Students learn about mapping the earth as it is, and then learn how the surface of the earth changes due to weathering and erosion. In a hands-on laboratory, students study earth’s soils, comparing and contrasting them and examining how desertification takes place. Students start by examining and defining crystals, with lots of hands-on activity. The three kinds of rocks are examined, and then students tackle the rock cycle, which shows the interrelationships between the various rock types. What can we learn from fossils, how can we understand the lessons that are in rocks, and how can the layering of the earth tell us what might have happened in the past. Students see a broad picture of an earth that has changed over time and examine the evidence for it. Importantly, students understand that the processes that occurred in the past are the same that are still occurring on our earth. This theory explains the drift of the continents, earthquakes, and volcanoes and thus unifies much of our experience under a single idea. This unit is a thorough explanation of plate tectonics, its processes and results. In a hands-on laboratory, students build their own seismograph—but more importantly, they understand the causes of earth movements as a direct result of the movement of earth's plates. Do you live in an area with lots of rain all year or a desert with limited rainfall.

Weather and climate are phenomena familiar to all of us and both have a huge bearing on our lives. In this unit students will study weather, including air masses and patterns of air circulation. What is the difference between weather and climate and in what ways has climate changed over time? Water is the basis of all life and the water cycle ensure that water is constantly being replenished on our earth. Of all the places that water resides none is more important than our oceans.Whether it is our relationship to fossil fuels or our concern with nuclear energy, we need to understand and make wise decisions about our resources and the energy we can get from them. What are the issues and debates surrounding our consumption of natural resources. How can we ensure that the next generation will have enough resources to advance. In this unit students will study the science of resources, which will give them a basis to participate in one of our society's most important debates. Students in this unit get a chance to understand our place in the universe. Starting at the level of the universe and then narrowing focus, students learn about the planets of the solar system, about how the earth rotates, the seasons, and about phenomena involving the moon. This unit provides a broad picture of our earth in space and concludes with an examination of how we have sought over time to understand space through exploration. They will learn about and follow scientific methods to set up, conduct, analyze, and make conclusions based on a hands-on investigation. Students will create a display of their investigation and then they will prepare to give an oral report.
