Get Free Estimates ! This guide covers instructions of how to repair an RV water heater on two of the most popular brands, Atwood and Suburban. Note: Installation, troubleshooting, repairs, and servicing, should be done by a certified professional. You can get up to 3 Free Quotes from the local plumbers if you contact this company and fill out a short form. What makes the high pitched noise on the electric heaters is the limescale (calcium) formation on the element, or even corrosion. The popping noise is also the result of mineral deposits build up in the tank, and it can affect both electric and gas units. The whistling sound can come from the stuck debris in the check valve. Solutions for the above noise problems are in periodic maintenance such as cleaning and flushing, or element replacement if the problem is severe. If the pilot flame is poor or not appropriately established, the recommendation is to clean or replace the orifice. If the U tube is blocked, remove the obstruction that makes the blockage. If you have an incorrect gas pressure reading, make the necessary adjustments of the gas pressure, and per instructions from the manufacturer manual. Adjustment are required if there is an improper air adjustment and for the main burner alignment. Here is how to troubleshoot the RV water heater when you experience the pilot outage (the button is released): If the thermocouple is weak, replace it. If it is loose, tighten the connection at the gas control; if it is not hot, re-position it to have better contact with the pilot flame.Re-position the electrode to get the proper gap. Clean dirty electrodes. Secure wire connections on the circuit board if it is loose. Replace the electrode if the insulation is cracked or wire inside is loose. Replace the circuit board if it is defective. Check and replace the following elements, if needed: circuit board, E.C.O., solenoid valve; tighten loose wires on E.C.O., wiring harness and solenoid valve.

Clean or replace the orifice if the burner orifice is blocked. Remove obstructions if the U tube or main burner is blocked. Replace the gas control if it is out of calibration. Align the flame spreader if it is misaligned. The electrode, solenoid valve or a circuit board is defective. Adjust the air shutter, burner and burner orifice holder if there is an improper air and main burner adjustment. Reset to desire temperature if the temperature selector is out of place. The thermostat has to be placed against the tank. If it is defective, replace it. Fix bypass lever and flame spreader if they are improperly positioned and misaligned. Since the water heating in RV vehicles runs in the closed system, when the water expands there is excess pressure that has to go somewhere; so the valve opens. If the dripping problem often occurs here is the way how to repair the RV hot water heater; by allowing the air pocket to be established. Turn of the RV water heater and cold water supply. Open the tap in the RV. Let the water out through the pressure relief valve until it stops. Once the water stops running, release the valve handle. Close the tap in the RV and turn on the cold water supply. As the cold water fills the tank, the air pocket will develop. Repeat the procedure as often as needed. If this is not the solution for your problem than an expansion tank needs to be installed. Adjust the main burner alignment, valve, air shutter or flame spreader. Check out if the recommended gas supply is present. Replace the fluctuating thermostat. Tighten the loose ground wire on the gas valve. Tighten the poor ground on the electrodes. This is happening because of the chemical reaction between released hydrogen and sulfur from the water and when bacteria develop. If your RV water heater, like Atwood for example, has the protective coating on the interior of the tank, during the process when it fights corrosion, this protective shield releases hydrogen from the water.

Hydrogen sulfide compound will be the result of chemical action between sulfur and released hydrogen, and it produces that stinky rotten egg odor. There is another solution to prevent corrosion, early tank failure and potential leaking, and is found in Suburban RV water heaters. Those models use an anode rod to protect the storage tank. Again, because of the aggressive water action, the anode rod tends to deteriorate and produce sediments in the tank, where bacteria develop and produces rotten egg odor. If using the antifreeze when winterizing a water heater, this process can accelerate sacrificial anode rod decay, unless you remove it. Should you replace the RV water heater. The answer is no. Use the RV repair instructions below, or contact a professional. First, you have to drain the heater tank. When you open a drain plug, water should flow steadily. If not, open the pressure and temperature relief valve to get the air in and use a wire to remove any obstacle in the drain opening. Let it sit inside for a few hours and then flush the system heavily, as it is hard to get rid of the taste, especially chlorine (or use filter). Keep in mind when troubleshooting Atwood and Suburban RV water heaters that this is not a complete list of problems, as many factors can directly or indirectly affect your RV water heater performance. Always use the manufacturer's guide for reference and instructions or call Atwood or Suburban technical support for details. Also, don't forget to use a reference manufacturer's guide often when performing the RV water heater repair. FREE Estimates. Learn new RV repair techniques and tips from friendly RV experts. Anytime. This is even more annoying if you are relatively new to the recreational vehicle life and have no knowledge of RV water heater troubleshooting methods or how your hot water system functions. In fact, with the help of this expert-taught, step-by-step video you can enjoy the satisfaction of both a hot shower and the knowledge that you discovered what was causing your RV water heater malfunction in the first place. And the best part of all, you don’t need to worry about taking your RV into a shop and waiting days to hear back. You can get the job done in your driveway, and likely for much cheaper! With just a few short minutes of your valuable time, this video will explain how the water heater system on an Atwood RV is designed to function, then proceed to help you to diagnose your problem in a safe, efficient manner. First things first, you should check that gas is coming through to your appliances. Light the stovetop burner and look for a steady flow with a solid flame. Next, use a voltage meter to check the input to the heater, which should be at least 10.5 volts. Dave explains what you should do if power isn’t reaching the thermostat (e.g. replacing a broken fusible link). Now, say you start up the system but you don’t hear a click. This likely means the coil is broken and needs to be repaired or replaced. If you do hear a click but don’t get a flame, you might have a clogged orifice or bad valve. If you don’t get a spark, your system could have an electrode that is bent or carbon grounding. Again, easy fix, quick solution. Okay, but what if you get through each of these steps and still can’t figure out what’s wrong. Please leave us a message or email your problem. We’ll be happy to work it through with you to find the right answer. Ready, set, troubleshoot your RV’s hot water system now! Older RVs had energy consuming incandescent bulbs while newer coaches have gone to halogens. Should one simply replace the bulb with the same type or upgrade to the new LED technology. In both cases, it’s clear just how important the batteries are to your RV life enjoyment. Keep up with RV battery maintenance is the simplest way to make sure you have power to make your coffee every morning, while still being able to start the motor and get you on the road when it’s time to move on. Batteries terminals and connections can corrode in a matter of weeks, and a corroded connection reduces the recharging capabilities of your batteries. When batteries sit in an uncharged state they will not only provide less power, they begin to sulfate. Sulfation is the number one killer of RV batteries. You’ll see how to remove loose corrosion powder from the outside of the battery, and what corroded posts look like when they need care. Find out what comes in a battery maintenance kit and why you need to have every item in there. You’ll see safety tips on the correct way to remove and attach battery cables, as well as hints on preventing damage from battery acid splashes. From visual inspections to using battery post protector, you’ll learn all the steps to RV battery maintenance here. Originally published on April 28th, 2015 The bypass valve is used for winterizing. Perhaps you forgot to switch the bypass valve back? If you have more than one faucet open at the same time, cold water will flow from one and hot from the other.

RV hot water heaters are small and cannot handle having two faucets open at the same allowing for hot water to flow to both. An improperly tuned propane burner will make a “roaring” sound. Too much air mixing with the propane will cause this sound. If you have a weak yellow flame, your burner isn’t getting enough air. An ideal flame would be one that has a blue flame with yellow tips. Spiders and other insects like the smell of propane and they will get inside the gas supply tube, this will cause the burner not to light. Check to be sure the exhaust area is clear too. This takes time, so be patient. Bacteria in your tank will cause the smell, especially if the water is stale from sitting too long. Yes, water can go stale, but it is easy to remedy. Drain and flush the tank. Flushing the tank first will get rid of any loose sediment. Use household bleach to sanitize the tank. Use 10 gallons of water to 5-6 ounces of bleach. This should sit for a bit while it’s doing the work. Flush out the bleach until the smell is gone. This most likely will need to be repeated a few times. Close up the tank and fill up the hot water tank again. A vinegar soak will help take care of this. Soaking the faucets in vinegar should dissolve the calcium deposits. Heat the vinegar in the microwave so it’s warm, not boiling. Repeat if necessary. The following could result in a soot problem; LP gas pressure, dirty orifice, dirty burner, misaligned burner, and a blocked exhaust grill. You may need an expert to check into these to ensure proper repairs. It’s a safety feature. You may see dripping from the valve. With age, the air is absorbed inside of the top of the tank, and you will need to replace that air to prevent the valve from dripping. However, if the valve drips while the tank is being heated, it does not necessarily mean the valve is defective. Check to see if the tank and system are full. Turn off the water supply. Open a faucet to release pressure that is inside.

Open the handle of the temperature and pressure valve until water stops. Close the valve, then close the faucet, finally turn the water back on. Annually, if used only for occasional outings. Drain the tank if you are storing your RV for long periods. Winterize before the first freeze. However, BMW has also attempted to increase refinement and ride quality to match the Mercedes C-Class. It’s a tough job to retain the 3 Series’ sporting appeal while also raising the bar in the comfort stakes. Remarkably, BMW seems to have pulled it off, as the 3 Series is still a very entertaining car to drive, with impressive road holding yet with an improved ride quality over its predecessor.

Part of this improvement is thanks to BMW’s new stroke-dependent suspension damper technology, which is a standard feature on all models. When the car is carrying a light load, the damping rate is softer, resulting in a compliant ride. Audi A4 vs Jaguar XE vs BMW 3 Series However, when the car is fully laden with passengers and luggage, the damping is stiffer to take into account the heavier load, which results in appreciably better body control without unduly affecting the ride quality. For the most part it works very well, but part of the improvement in the 3 Series’ ability is also the result of using BMW’s latest CLAR platform. It’s an impressive feat given the 3 Series is larger than its predecessor. More reviews Car group tests BMW M3 Competition vs Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio BMW 3 Series Touring vs Mercedes C-Class Estate vs Volvo V60 BMW 330e vs Volvo S60 T8 In-depth reviews BMW 3 Series review BMW 3 Series Touring review Long-term tests BMW 320d M Sport: long-term test review Road tests New BMW M3 Competition 2021 review New BMW M340i xDrive 2019 review The 3 Series lives up to the driver appeal expected of the model with excellent poise and agility, comfortably beating both the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class in this respect. But like its rivals it does suffer a little from having slightly lifeless steering that doesn’t offer keen drivers a huge amount of feedback. Despite this, the 3 Series is still a drivers’ car with excellent grip and composure. And while the steering rack lacks feel it is quick, allowing accurate and rapid corrections to your cornering line. This can be improved by opting for one of the models with BMW’s xDrive four-wheel drive system, which makes the 3 Series even more surefooted no matter the conditions.

The manual is an improvement on the previous generation’s slightly notchy change, while the automatic is an excellent transmission with smooth changes throughout, whether the gearbox is left to its own devices or whether changing gear manually with the steering wheel-mounted paddles. On the motorway the 3 Series is an accomplished cruiser, offering lower noise levels than it exhibited previously, which is in part thanks to the standard fit acoustic glazing. The ride is good too, and while in the past we might have recommended the optional adaptive dampers, this is no longer necessary thanks to the stroke-dependent dampers. On the largest wheels there is an occasional thump from the worst potholes, but it’s certainly no worse than its rivals in this respect. 18 There's no M3 for now so those after performance will be best served by either the M340d or M340i. However, it's best to consider this pair as fast, capable cruisers, as they're good to drive but don't feel much different to M Sport models. Adaptive suspension is standard making for great ride quality if Comfort mode is selected. Things sharpen up in Sport and while some may find it a little uncomfortable, it offers a marked improvement in dynamics on the right piece of road. The 318d and 320d use 2.0-litre diesel engines producing 148bhp and 187bhp respectively; these four-cylinder diesel 3 Series models come with a choice of six-speed manual or eight-speed automatics; all but 318d models can be fitted with four-wheel drive. 0-62mph takes 8.4 seconds in the manual 318d or a tenth slower in the auto, while it’s 6.8 seconds for the 320d auto. Performance-conscious diesel buyers will be best served by the 330d, which gets a straight-six with 261bhp. 0-62mph takes 5.5 seconds in the rear-drive car or 5.1 seconds in the four-wheel drive version. This six-cylinder unit also features in the M340d xDrive, producing 335bhp and dispatching the same sprint in 4.6 seconds.

Tesla Model 3 vs BMW 3 Series: electric car vs diesel showdown The plug-in hybrid 330e is powered by the four-cylinder petrol from the 320i, but adds an electric motor to produce a total output of 249bhp. 0-62mph takes 5.9 seconds and the car’s battery provides a claimed 41 miles of all-electric running. The Touring estate is slightly heavier than the saloon and so performance figures suffer ever so slightly, with a few tenths chopped off 0-62mph times. You won’t notice the difference in the real world, though. The 320d will be the default choice for many drivers, despite the diesel backlash, and it’s easy to see why as it offers an excellent blend of performance and economy. The engine is reasonably familiar as it’s used in many BMW models, but has been upgraded for the new 3 Series with a number of revisions. It produces 187bhp and 400Nm of torque, which means a 0-62mph time of 6.8 seconds for the eight-speed automatic. If you prefer your 3 Series with xDrive four-wheel drive, the 320d xDrive takes 6.9 seconds to do 0-62mph and has a top speed of 145mph, four mph less than the rear-wheel drive 320d. The previous generation 320d was a little noisy for our liking, but there have been improvements for this new model and it is quieter than before, only sounding a little grumbly when extended. On the move the engine is generally very refined and with additional soundproofing and the acoustic glazing, it’s a hushed companion at motorway speeds. Follow us on Facebook Follow us on Twitter Follow us on YouTube Follow us on Instagram. Why is the 320d such a popular choice. The strong 380Nm torque, available across a wide rev range, makes this a lively engine. See, a modern turbo diesel lets you scurry off the line and calmly, without needing to break a revving sweat, cruise up a hill and overtake slower traffic. People also buy diesels for their fuel efficiency. On a long-distance round trip, including foot-flat overtaking, at 815km travelled there was still a quarter tank left. It really sounds harsh and clattery, which is not in sync with the smart sedan personality. Part if its efficiency is the auto stop-start, which switches off the engine to conserve fuel such as when waiting at a red traffic light, but then the 320d engine switches back on, and the roughness is felt. Driving experience? The gearbox is the superb 8-speed automatic, here with the optional Sports Steptronic as an option above the normal Steptronic, so you have a choice of auto or sports-auto, which basically gets you a more responsive (sporty) gearbox, a different shaped gear selector (which fits into the driver’s hand at more of an angled grip) and there are paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. BMW still offers manuals on all its 4-cylinder cars, but the 320d is best with automatic. No doubt. In fact, the 8-speed auto is more economical than the 6-speed manual. The engine-gearbox interaction is so good, and the gearbox so responsive and super-smooth, you’ll simply make effortless progress. All new F30 3 Series, launched here in February 2012, has the keyless start feature, so no need to turn the key: just press the start button as long as the key is on your person or in the car.
