These artists are able to generate sales that allow them to devote all of their time to their art. They have found ways to make a successful living while at the same time pursuing their passion. Success for these artists can come from the satisfaction of creating work that is unique and innovative. Other artists enjoy the thrill of sharing their talents with others and the adulation they receive for their work. These artists seek the intangible benefits that come by sharing their creativity. As you can see in the diagram, the three can overlap. The greatest success can come to an artist who achieves a balance of all three, but achieving success in all three areas can take a lifetime. For example, an artist who is focussing on artistic excellence may put all of her effort into studio work. She may spend very little time attempting to expose or sell her work.No artist creates in a vacuum, and many would argue that no work is complete until it has been shared with an audience. Many artists hunger for the opportunity to share their work. Art is communication at a very emotional and elemental level. These artists align their passion and sales efforts and focus not only on creating, but also on getting work in front of potential buyers. Again, sales may not be the highest priority. Art festivals and gallery representation might be the highest priority. As a gallery owner, my focus is on selling artwork, and so my post today is going to center on principles that have helped artists become more successful in selling their work. I want, however, to acknowledge that sales are not the only worthy goal for an artist. With that said, this post is directed to artists who wish to sell more work. An artist should be prepared to work hard and make sacrifices in order to achieve success. Your motivation will help you set your priorities. Dave is one of our best-selling artists, and is also one of the hardest-working people I know.

If I want to reach Dave just about any time of the day or night, I call his studio where I’m always most likely to find him. A lot of time and a lot of work. Successful artists are dedicated to their creative efforts. The are consistently and constantly in the studio producing. In order to generate steady sales, you need to have your work in front of a large number of potential buyers in a variety of venues (more on this below). In order to sustain multiple venues, you have to have a strong, large body of work. The vast majority of successful artists I’ve met over the years had taken the plunge to produce their art full time before they found financial success in their career. Carve out specific, regular time that you can dedicate to creating. That discipline will be invaluable in helping you produce a body of salable art. The discipline you establish now will make you incredibly productive when you are able to take the leap and focus on your work full time. Block out time that you can dedicate to your art. This is a difficult question to answer because the number varies pretty dramatically from one artist to the next. I work with artists who produce over 100 pieces per year, and with artists who produce fewer than 30. Instead of giving you a specific number to aim for, I encourage you to look over the last year and calculate the number of pieces you produced. Once you know how many works you produced during the last year, set a goal to increase your production in the next year by 25. You can pursue subject matter that captivates your imagination, and depict your subject in a style that excites you. I have found that artists who create work that they are passionate about are the most successful in the long run. While some artists develop a clear artistic vision right away, most artists have to experiment and explore before discovering where their passion lies.

Some artists will try their hand at various media as they are getting started, and others will explore a wide range of subjects and styles. As an artist begins moving toward generating sales and building a professional career around his or her art, it becomes important that the artist begins focusing on a cohesive, identifiable body of work. If you look at the work of commercially successful fine artists, you will find that almost all of them have developed a recognizable style and have cultivated a consistency in their work that ties the work together. It simply means that if you want to successfully sell your work, you need to develop a style that your collectors can easily identify as yours. I look at six criteria If your subject, style, theme and palette are consistent, you can work in several different media with a variety of presentations. Conversely, if your medium, presentation, palette, style and presentation are consistent, you can explore a wide variety of subjects and themes. This allows her to explore a range of subjects but still maintain consistency in her work. Determine which pieces are most consistent and strive to make your next ten pieces consistent with these works. Building a well-run, well-organized business around your art will allow you to avoid the disarray and frustration that surrounds many artists as their work begins to sell. By being organized you actually free yourself to focus on creating. They’ve implemented systems that allow them to keep track of all of the moving parts of their art business.

Every artist is going to have different business needs and will find different tools that will work best for meeting those needs. The important thing is to make a commitment to organizing these key areas so that you can scale up your business as sales increase. These artists have brought in assistants to help them tackle the business. Sometimes the assistant will be a spouse or other family member. For other artists, hiring someone to come into the studio several times a week to help is a better option. Do you have robust systems and routines in place that allow you to track your business activity? This list of requirements will help you evaluate potential tools. To a certain extent, art sales is a numbers game. In order to find buyers who will be interested in your work and in a financial position to purchase. In order to reach those buyers, you need to have your artwork on display in a variety of venues. Many started their careers by participating in outdoor art festivals and shows. Art shows are an opportunity not only to display and sell work, but an opportunity for you to build your contact list and develop salesmanship skills. In addition to art festivals, many of these artists have participated in art organizations that host open studio tours and put on other shows. Building relationships with galleries gives artists something that shows or personal promotion can’t, constant, long-term exposure backed by a professional sales staff. Besides the broad exposure this strategy creates, showing in a variety of markets can help stabilize your sales. It’s often the case that if sales are down in one area, they may be up in another. Seek shows and venues that successfully attract qualified art buyers and have a track record of generating sales. Research various art markets and the galleries that serve those markets in order to find those galleries that would be the best fit for your work. When you’re buried in support tickets and live chats, and you find yourself answering the same questions over and over again, it can feel incredibly frustrating. How can I help more customers in less time with the same quality of service?” It helps customers find answers to solve problems on their own and — if you do it right — a good knowledge base can scale out your customer support program while improving the overall customer experience. That's a large potential margin of error. A study by Forrester confirmed that customers prefer knowledge bases over all other self-service channels. This is likely because the vast majority of customers want an immediate response to their customer service question — 90, in fact. They usually look something like this. They ways they do this can vary, but it usually starts out with some sort of ticketing or case management system. And when it comes to reactive customer service, it’s time-consuming (because you have to have well-trained support staff operating these systems and interacting with customers to ensure a good experience) and can get repetitive. For example, if you work at a photo-sharing startup, you might get the same question about how to upload a photo dozens of times per day. It shows you how your user experience may or may not be intuitive and how it could be improved. But in the m eantime, this reactive repetition is time consuming, stressful, and isn’t scalable. Scaling out your customer success initiatives allows you to be more proactive in creating happy and successful customers — and it saves customer service reps valuable time. Happy and successful customers then often turn into customer advocates, almost becoming an external sales force for your business. And you already know that leads to business success.

Returning to our photo sharing app example, why not simply create an article to explain the process of uploading a photo. That way, a user can search for and find this article, or you can simply send them the article via your regular ticketing system to save time. It can also include functions like a frequently-asked questions (FAQ) section, a user forum, articles, white papers, how-to articles, video tutorials, case studies, and dictionaries or glossaries — essentially, anything that helps customers understand and use your products or services. In most contexts, we think of it as an online knowledge base, something that helps customers find answers to common questions. Let’s move onto best practices for building a self-serve customer education center. First, the customer has to actually be able to find answers to their questions. This brings user experience, design, architecture, and even SEO into the mix. It’s hard to write clear yet robust instructions, but it is possible. Most of these start out at a high-level, almost like a traditional home page for support-based content. This example from Evernote displays that clearly. You can also check out their other support options like tickets, social media, and their community. If a user has a problem, can they find the solution. Key focus areas here should be in sifting the most popular articles to the home page and making them prominent, as well as improving search functions so users can find their specific problems. Here’s a summary of Evernote’s UX: In both cases, you want to attract readers with a strong and clear headline, give lucid and helpful instructions, and allow them to walk away with new information or ideas. Be clear, specific, and descriptive. The addition here is simply to link to as many helpful resources as possible and to prioritize readability and understandability over complexity and nuance. What about video content? People learn in different ways — some prefer to read, while some prefer to watch.

Difficult steps can be shown in place of complicated diagrams, or large lists of written steps. Text translations can be expensive, and can lose specific meaning in translation (especially with proprietary terms or deeply technical or industry specific terms). Text also assumes your user reads and understands at the level of the author, which can lead to confusion and frustration. Video removes these barriers by showing and not telling.Research has shown that searches related to “how-to” on YouTube are growing 70 year over year. Text-based content is more likely to rank on search engines, making it more discoverable to customers searching for solutions. Video content generally allows for more visual tutorials and step-by-step walkthroughs — although video content can rank on YouTube, which is the second-largest search engine after Google itself. It really helps visual learners understand what you’re talking about. Usually, simple screenshots with annotation will suffice. Do you know what topics to include in your knowledge base. We dive into that next. It’s simple: Look for trends. You can also find bottlenecks in the user experience of your website using tools like HotJar or Usabilla, or even simply by running some user tests to see where people struggle to complete tasks. No user experience will ever be perfect for all people, and if some are struggling with a task, you can improve their experience by giving them self-serve documentation to figure it out. All you need to do is check out your internal site search analytics (make sure it’s enabled).We analyze article traffic, contact rates, and search queries from our help center, then compare it to customer support email data to uncover recurring themes and surface language patterns to create targeted content that resonates with customers.

We specifically focus on data from support emails that present self-service opportunities—common themes that can be answered in only 1 or 2 replies from our customer support team.A remarkable knowledge base is a living document, meaning it needs to be actively managed and updated to best serve your customers. These few best practices will allow your knowledge base to make the biggest impact on your customers and provide help and answers when they need it. Reference your customer information when developing your knowledge base. Just as you researched trends to establish your knowledge base topics, use these trends to better understand how to write about and position your knowledge base articles. Craft the tone and style in a way that speaks to your audience, keeps them interested, and answers their questions. If they can't understand the answers you're providing, they'll get in touch with your customer service team — which defeats the purpose of proactively providing a knowledge base in the first place. Failing to keep your knowledge base consistent with your brand voice, colors, and design provides a disjointed experience for customers seeking to learn more about your products or services. Keep it consistent with your overall company branding, and include formatting and writing guidelines specific to your knowledge base articles. This helps keep your knowledge base uniform and professional, no matter who's writing articles or updating content. Add alt text for all screenshots, images, and videos included in articles. Check for any contrasting colors that may be tough to see against certain backgrounds or buttons. Add hyperlinked tables of contents to help readers navigate long articles. Lastly, confirm your knowledge base is mobile-friendly before launch. If you neglect your knowledge base content, over time, it'll be useless — and customers will notice.

Just as you train your customer support staff on product or service updates, so should you actively update your knowledge base articles. The same goes for creating new articles for new features or entirely new products. This helps you avoid having to update content in multiple places. While it's primary purpose is to answer questions and provide support to curious customers, it can hold value elsewhere. Not only does it provide a more in-depth explanation of the feature, but it also showcases your product in action for those readers who may not (yet) be customers. How do you know if customers are leaving your knowledge base article happily with new knowledge and answers in their head — or if they’re leaving, frustrated and without answers, contemplating changing to a competitor. On the same note, how do you know you’re creating the right content and actually answering everything your customers care about? First, include basic, one-question feedback surveys at the end of each article. Secondly, provide an email address or phone number for customers to provide further feedback or ask additional questions. For that, let’s go over some excellent knowledge base examples. This is just the tip of the iceberg (and it’s a great way to get people started without overwhelming them). When you scroll further, you see the crazy breadth of topics they cover here. It’s really easy to walk away from these articles knowing what actions you need to take to get things to work in the product. Good mix of images, video, and text as well. This helps users find solutions to related issues.
