The valves were way out of adjustment and the muffler had sheared off from the vibration. As stated previously.not worth the price tag. Much better units (higher efficiency and quieter) out there. Just an update on my update. Unit is acting up again. It is back-firing when I try to start it. It will start up and run after numerous attempts. These will be my final comments on this generator and I would not reccommend purchasing this generator. Customer servcie at Briggs said they quit putting in batteries some time ago but did not change their adervertising. First time I used the machine the power went out I went out in the rain to start the machine. It started fine and ran for about 15 minutes then shut down and would not restart. I made the mistake of not latching the access door to the controls. Apparently moisture got in and shut the machine down. After I let the machine dry out for 24 hours it started and ran perfictly.

Be sure to shut and latch the access door in wet weather. I wanted to run the machine on Natural Gas. It came with the proper jet to convert it. It said that I would need a special tool and gave the part number to change the jet. When it arrived it was a short handle screw driver. If you load the machine too fast it trips the GFI and the machine goes down. It will not start and run. It does not give you any indication that the cause is the GFI needs to be reset. You will need to turn off the main circuit breaker to reset. The breaker is located in the upper right hand corner of the control panel in my unit. Some circuits would work but others would trip out the generator. I finally determined that the cause of the problem was high voltage(170 volts on the 120 volt circuits) from the generator. The problem was the voltage regulator. It is located inside the cabinet on the floor of the cabinet on the right hand side when looking from the control panel side. A couple of screws and the circuit board can be removed. Replacement boards are available on the internet. Just google the model number. I highly recommend installing a cheap volt meter in one of the plug ins on the machine and check the voltage when starting the generator. In retrospect a Briggs is negligent in not providing a volt meter as high voltage could cause serious fire or other damage to a home. RJ 4.0 out of 5 stars I did alot of research and since we have no natural gas in the area, and did not want to put an propane tank in the ground, this unit seemed the logical choice. Now I can't say much as to the other reviews I have read regarding maintenance, but for this review, I will keep it to my personal experience. We lost power as Tropical Storm Sandy hit and have been using this generator for 7 days now. It has worked flawlessly but I have also used it cautiously. We start it first thing in the morning, and run to mid afternoon. Rest it for a few hours, and then run it again until we go to bed. The house is nice and warm and there is no need to run it at night although you can. It's a bit loud but not awful. We had it professionally installed and it handles our home (approx 3,000 sq.The house is nice and toasty, and I even have (3) wine Eurocave units hooked to it. This unit handles everything without issue and based on that I highly recommend it. As for fuel consumption, I am averaging 12 hours on (2) tanks of propane. Now here are a few things you should know. 1) When I purchased it, I was unaware that it did not come with a battery or hardware to bolt it down. The installation manual has since been changed. As stated in previous reviews, this unit will not start on it's own as a true standby generator. You have to hook up the cable from the unit to the transfer switch that you had installed. You then need to start the generator. Just a switch on the front panel. A bit inconvenient but better than darkness and cold. You need to either run the unit one a month for 30 minutes or physically charge the battery. Now to do this, you need to remove the top, and then the front of the unit. It's annoying to do this.
