Patti A. 1.0 out of 5 stars That it has an espresso doser was a big plus. And for a few months this was a great little machine. Soon, though, grounds started jamming up the burr. Then, when grinding fine coffee, it would block the exit into the ground coffee receptacle. It seemed like I was taking the thing apart every day. This caused the bean holder to crack, and now it's unusable. Fortunately I have an old blade grinder available while I search for a really good, sturdy burr grinder.I received it as a wedding present from a close friend, and was looking forward to dispensing directly into my espresso filter. One problem, my espresso maker's filter and filter basket (whatever that handle-thing is called) don't fit under the dispenser! Oops.

I have had problems with the intake of beans into the grinder mechanism. I was having to shake the machine to get the beans to grind. Eventually, the beans stopped grinding altogether. After calling Briel's service line, I determined that the mechanism was clogged. A little poking and some vacuuming and it was as good as new. One theory of why this is happening to some reviewers and not others, is that it depends on the coarseness of the grind. Finally, this machine is a little messy, but not much more than other grinders I have used. After grinding a few pounds of coffee I had the same problem with clogging. I tried cleaning it by running a pipe cleaner through it over and over which just BARELY helped. The unit is unusable for espresso. It will not feed any beans into the grinder reliably. Two generally accepted excellent grinders available are the Rancilio Rocky and Gaggia MDF.It did this just fine, but in the process it dusts a large portion of my kitchen counter with coffee grounds. This seems to stem from two problems. The first is that there is no seal between the grinder and the grounds container, which allows some coffee to fly out the sides when grinding. The second problem is that everything becomes so electrostaticly charged, that when you open the container the grounds scatter everywhere no matter how careful you are. I was very disappointed by this and am back to looking for a good grinder. It works much better with the coarser gind for drip coffee, but stay away from it if you want to use it on weekends for espresso.I have to tell you that I'm a big Espresso drinker, so looking forward to trying my new ginder out for the first time. I attached the dispenser for pre-measured amount of ground coffee. Cool feature right. Nope ! I turn the Grinder on and watched ground coffee fly on to my counter top from the bottom of the despenser. Ok, I attached the storage container and Ground some coffee into it.

I poured the coffee in a Jar that I use to seal my coffee to keep fresh. But this made a mess also. The grind of the coffee at the lowest setting is still to course for my liking. So I decide to ship this item back. To put icing on the Cake. (.) I have purchased a much better coffee grinder for half of the sale price that lasted for four years. The motor in my opinion is far from heavy-duty or a professional Grinder. Well, I'm off to buy another Coffee grinder. Thank you for you time.Initially this grinder worked great. However, within 2 months the system became clogged with finely ground coffee causing the motor to seize. It was impossible to clean well enough to solve the problem. In addition the owners manual was totally lacking in describing what to do when a problem like this arises. I use the product on a daily basis therefore the warning not to leave coffee in the container for an extended period of time was worthless. Finally, the manual gives no hints about how one would contact Briel. Turn the machine ON. Naturally, not all the machines are the same, but most have common, easy-to-use features such as a steam wand for frothing milk, a coffee filter and a dial which allows you to choose the strength of your beverage. The basic process of using the machines is similar across all models. Briel is a manufacturer of coffee machines. Fill the water tank to the level indicated on the unit. Switch the coffee machine on.

You will notice a light on the front of your machine will illuminate when the water is at a suitable brewing temperature. Markings are different on each model, but the light will more than likely illuminate beside a picture of a coffee cup or a temperature symbol. Place the filter basket in the filter basket holder, the cylinder with the handle attached. Place espresso-ground coffee inside the filter basket and tamp it down. If your model is equipped for using coffee pods, use the special filter for the pod. Secure the filter basket holder into the metallic port on the underside of the main body of the Briel espresso machine. Twist it snugly into place. Adjust the size of your espresso shot. There will be a dial which you can adjust which will change the size of your espresso (usually signified by the symbol of a slightly filled cup at the beginning of the dial range, stretching to the symbol of a full coffee cup). Turn the dial to the size of espresso shot you would like. Press the button on your espresso machine that looks like a coffee cup to make your coffee. If you wish to add frothed milk to your espresso, press the button on your machine that is beside a symbol for steam. Wait for the nearby light to illuminate--this tells you the water in the tank is at a suitable temperature to produce steam. Place the wand inside a jug of hot milk and turn the knob on the top of your machine very gradually. You will hear the steam beginning to heat the milk and eventually you will see the heating process. When you have frothed the milk, add it to your espresso. Fold a thick cloth three or four times for extra thickness and use it to clean the steam wand. Clean the rest of the machine, too, before switching the unit off. Temple graduated with honors with a journalism degree at Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland. It sounds like an airraid siren, and it generates so much static that you can use it for a science experiment.
Cleaning consists mainly of using a metal pick to lever out coffee beans stuck into the slotted sides of the upper burr grinder (why these slots were there I don?t know) Although it'll grind everything from french press to turkish, about 15 - 20 grams of coffee gets stuck in the works. I use the Solis Mulino now, and I'm a happy camper. Most grinders at this pricepoint don't work at all, so the Briel isn't quite as awful as I said. I guess my basic advice is to avoid all grinders at this price point, and to either spend more on a new grinder or hunt for a bargain price on a used one. They authorized me to open the machine and look for loose wires which I did and found one of the wires to the main switch was disconnected. I'm not sure if this is a quality escape from the manufacturer or happened during shipment. After reassembling the machine it worked like a champ producing great espressos and cappaccinos with excellent crema. The added burr grinder makes this machine an excellent choice for those who like freshly ground coffee. Taking the machine apart and reassembling would not be for the faint of heart but, on a mechanically inclined scale of 1 to 5, this would be about a 3.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Two centuries later Peugeot, with its expertise in working with durable and quality materials such as steel and wood, and a desire to create everyday objects that are practical and easy to use, without sacrificing on the aesthetics or quality, seized upon this must-have item for coffee lovers. I bought it to use along side my Aeropress, and was in the market for an affordable hand grinder that wouldn't take up a lot of space. Two design notes that I think would elevate the grinder: include a rubber or silicone (or something) part to hold the grinder handle when not in use; and ditch the plastic view window. Having a way to keep the handle in place while storing would be a nice touch to keep all things in order, especially while traveling. I use a hair elastic to keep the handle with the grinder and while it works it isn't very elegant. Secondly, I think that for future designs, the plastic view point should be ditched. With a hand grinder, you know when you have grinded all your beans because the resistance is gone when cranking. So the view window isn't necessary. Plus the plastic inlay makes it harder to clean (not like super hard, but like enough that I often reach for a toothpick or straw brush to clean the grooves inside). Just having the stainless steel bottom even as an optional switch would be great so the consumer can choose would be great. For the price, it works very well and is great for budget-minded coffee consumers. I bought mine with the 3 coffee bag combo as I am new to homebrewing and wanted to see which types of roast I prefer. With the combo deal, I don't know what anyone would buy a portable hand grinder anywhere else. M. D. it's simple, works well and consistently, and doesn't take up too much room in my small kitchen. Jody V. My kid got this as a grad gift a few years back. As a non coffee drinker it missed the mark, but his coffee loving mom was stoked. Fast forward three years later when he comes home for an extended Covid-19 visit and discovers he loves coffee. Now he wants his grinder back. I ordered his a few weeks ago and it arrived promptly and in good condition. He lifted it in the box and we’re still using my, scratch, his old one. Three years and going strong! Julianna R.
The grinder is easy to use and grind the beans and the little booklet that comes with it is very helpful. Definitely requires a little adjusting to get the grind you like, but it's easy to adjust and take apart and clean. Whansoo L. Good product. Easy to use Sarah J. After accidentally grabbing a bag of whole bean coffee, twice, I found myself in need of a grinder. I did my research and the JavaPresse was a favourite among consumers, reviewers, and coffee shops. I decided to give it a try and I’m so glad I did. I’m so impressed with this coffee grinder. It’s small, easy to handle, works very well and is easy to clean and care for. If that’s not enough, the difference it makes in the quality of coffee is amazing. Fresh ground is so much better than pre-ground. I’ll never go back! The fact that it’s a burr grinder also makes a difference in taste and I love it. The hand you hold the canister with can get tired, but unless you’re grinding enough beans to fill the whole reservoir, it’s not that bad. It also grinds a good amount of coffee in less than 10 minutes. I recommend this grinder to anyone. Lisa G. I like it. It is portable and easy to use, small and quiet! Harold W. It took me several tries to get this fine precision made instrument fine tuned, but it is now and is holding my setting. I am using this grinder several times a day and enjoying a fantastic tasting cup of coffee, you have to break your wrist to keep from having another right away. As a matter of fact several times I had to have that second cup. Cody O. I'm in the military, so questionable coffee in the early mornings are pretty standard. In our house, we have an electric grinder. It is very loud to be running at 0530 before our 9 month old is up. Enter in the JavaPresse Manual Burr Grinder. It's quick, quiet, and way more consistent. And that consistency is what leads to a cup of coffee tiers above what I am used to. I love this thing!
It's also simple and compact so I can take it anywhere I need it to go. Where has this thing been during my whole career?! Without a doubt, I would recommend this to anyone needing a grinder! Curtis R. Great grinder and solid customer serviceThe only reason I'm knocking off a star is that adjusting the coarseness setting is a bit hit and miss. Once you have it dialed in for either Espresso (pretty fine) or French press (course) - the extremes that our household needs to access - it grinds the beans beautifully. What takes a while and some fussing around is getting it back to the opposite setting. Counting the clicks per the instructs only gets you so close. My solution is to buy a 2nd grinder, which I have just done. Also, the clear plastic liner in the container is about a millimeter or so too tall. It hits the bottom of the hopper, with the result being that the metal parts don't mate smoothly and wiggle while you're grinding. After doing this, the metal parts fit snugly and the wiggle is gone. Sheila O. I would like to have the brochure that comes with it. I had trouble downloading. I use different coffee makers(pour over, mocha pot, and aeropress). So I am changing the grind and it is easier for me to work with a hard copy. But I do love using it and love the results. When filled up, it makes the normal amount I use for a pot of coffee. Easy to put together and use. One suggestion I'd make though is for some kind of funnel. With the main shaft in the middle, it is hard to get the beans into the chamber for grinding. A funnel that sent the beans around the shaft would really help. Jamie W. We bought the grinder for those mornings at anchor on the boat, but found it's great for vacations too. Grinds just enough coffee for 2 good sized mugs and it's cleaner than our electric grinder. COTTON W. Simply constructed, no confusion. I just cleaned mine for the first time; so easy! And, yearly replacement of the burrs is sure to be a cinch!
Received the grinder as a gift and it has been great for the last few years. Recently, the pin in the handle managed to fall out and I lost it. Emailed customer service in less than 3 hours since my first email, customer service said they would send a replacement handle. A great grinder and great customer service. Thank you again Jacque! It's been a week since I got the grinder and it seems to do its job well. The coffee is smooth and I like how it is compact so I can take it everywhere with my Aeropress. Terryann P. Easy to Use and a Pleasure to Use. I was used to an electric grinder but the noise always really bothered me. And now the satisfying quiet crunch is a nice way to start the day, as well as the delicious smell of coffee beans. Thanks for a great product. I would recommend this to friends and family. Cindy I. Manual Burr Grinder. I had been using an electric blade grinder as a once-in-a while very inexperienced coffee drinker and did find that the grind was very inconsistent. I had been getting more interested in pour over brewing for it’s simplicity and decided to try this manual grinder. I am a sucker for well-designed everyday objects, and was very pleased with the quality. The video tutorials and extremely welcoming customer service have inspired me to explore the world of coffee:) Drew T Customer service wins the day. I loved my grinder when I got it. After a few weeks the glue that held the plastic into the body failed. I contacted Raj and in a few days I had a new one in my hand. The customer service of Java Presse is top notch. The grind quality is very consistent and it's a good looking product. The price point is excellent for what you're getting. I would like to see a more adventure friendly version in the future. Perhaps a powder coat finish on the body, parts that screw together, and a more secure way to retain the spring on the shaft. I wish I had this while I was in the Marines. Virginia B. I love my grinder!
I bought this grinder after researching lots of options for a hand grinder to use at home and in my office. I'm really impressed with it. And so much supportive info on the website, which is really helpful for a home barista newbie like me. Buy it, you'll love it. Nicole K Great Grinder, Awesome Company. I love my JavaPresse Burr Grinder. I bought it a few months back, and I use it daily. I love being able to grind fresh grounds at work. The grinder produces a very even grind, and the coarse setting is perfect for my French Press. It's easy to clean and very portable. I'm already planning to put it in my suitcase on my next trip. In addition to being a great product, the JavaPresse company is amazing. Shortly after I got the grinder, I lost one of the tiny washers (down the sink) when I was cleaning. Customer Service didn't even hesitate. They immediately sent out a full washer replacement set. I was very impressed with their level of support. I recommend both this product and everything else this company sells. Kamil A. Manual Burr Coffee Grinder. Excellent customer service, the grinder is in great quality, but there is only problem is the coffee grinder produces a inconsistent grind when it is set to coarse mode. It does great job in grinding coffee from very fine to medium, but I think this grinder is not intended for French press maker. I will be happy to see upgraded version of the grinder, especially in getting rid of the blur wobble Amber hadley Love my burr grinder. Started using javapresse burr grinder 6 months ago. I can confirm grinding my own coffee makes for a more enjoyable cup of coffee. Not only does this company have amazing products but the customer service is beyond wonderful ! Corey C. Simple and effective tool. It takes a bit longer then using my electric grinder, but the grind size is much more consistent which makes it more than worth the little bit of extra time and effort.
I no longer get the coffee dust that leads to sludge at the bottom of my cup. I'm tossing my electric grinder in favor of this one. Alex G. Coffee Grinder. I love your coffee grinder. After plenty of research, yours was the one that had everything coffee enthusiasts recommended. I’m using the same brand of coffee I’ve always used except I made the switch to whole bean. Fresh ground coffee is amazing. I like the different settings that allow me to customize the ground based on my brewing method. I currently use a pour over filter, but I’ll be trying a French press and Aeropress next. Nathaniel C. Pleasantly surprised! The ability to adjust the grind size and the consistency of the the grind were two standouts. Only downside is the time it takes to grind (approximately 8-10 grams a minute). I'll be using this for my camping trips though, so I'll have plenty of downtime. Kenneth Slaughter Coffee Grinder. I recently purchased a manual grinder from JavaPresse, because of many positive reviews on Amazon. I initially had some trouble figuring out how to set the grind setting properly, and then grinding my first batch. I thought it might be something amiss with the grinder, although I really wasn't sure about that at all. I emailed the company, not really seeking a refund or a replacement, but mostly to see if they had any tips. To my surprise, they sent a new grinder and refunded my money. The new grinder works great, and I have now become addicted to grinding my coffee manually, which is kind of a therapeutic exercise. The coffee seems to taste better. Because of this excellent service, I decided to sign up for the coffee club. I just ordered my first bag. I am sold on this company because of the customer service, and can't wait to receive my first bag of coffee beans. Rachel Immediate fan. Bought this grinder (along with a French press and coffee subscription) for the office as an alternative to our unfortunate K-cup situation and I'm an immediate fan.
