A strategy guide, in my opinion, should give a bit more information on items we all look for; namely legandary. I know you can't expect everything from a guide, but I think it could have been a bit better at covering some of the game other than the main story line, which bored the hell out of me after about a week playing the game. I do like the playthrough tips, maps, suggested routes, etc., for the most part. The locations of chests, goodies, etc.I give it a three, but it's a 3.5 for certain. If you prefer using online assistance, don't buy this book. If you like to have a quick reference guide by your side, this is a good deal. Update 23 April 2013- I am very careful with anything I purchase, books particularly. I've only had this strategy guide for 1.5 months and the binding is begining to come undone. It's a bit disappointing, as I still get most of my gaming information on line. At this rate, I figure the book will fall apart by mid-summer. Maybe I just got a defective book, but regardless; I expected it to last longer, or I'd have purchased the paperback version. If possible, I'd rate this item as a 1.5 or 2, based on the poor quality of it's manufacturing. If they're both gonna fall apart, go with the paperback- it's cheaper.In addition, this guide looks and feels so amazing, hard-cover, a true collection item. Being the fan of the series, this is not something that I wanted to miss from my collection.Certain rare legendary item locations are left out, like what boss you need to kill to get the item. If you have the Borderlands 1 GOTY Limited Edition Guide, you would see why this one doesn't get 5 stars. That one did come out a year after the game originally came out along with the GOTY version of the game. In that guide, it had all the main and side missions you would want to pick up as you entered a new town and a good path to follow to get them done quickly.
The Borderlands 2 guide has the main story missions in one chapter and the side missions, listed alphabetically, in another chapter. To me, these hardcover guides are more of a collector's item.It also has quotes from the game staff throughout, and that is another thing that makes it pretty awesome. Hope this review helpsThat being said, you don't need this guide, but you will want this guide. The guide gives an essential overview of each character class and skill tree, along with developer hints on allocation of skill points. In addition to walkthroughs for all story and side missions there is a breakdown of all enemies with weapon weaknesses and multipliers. Most all the information in this guide can be found for free on the interwebz, but if you are a fan of the series you should buy this.It also helps you find all of the Vault Symbols, which is also very helpful. The only reason I held back one star was due to the later-released (now available) Borderlands 2 Map App for iPhone and iPad. The map app ALSO shows you where every Vault Symbol is (with even more pictures than the guide) as well as the locations of each bad ass rank challenge.I love everything about the game and knew I would end up wanting to search for all of the collectibles and extras within the game. I must admit though, if I wasnt such a Borderlands fanboy, I would have went with the soft-cover or just looked up the info online for free. That being said, I am extremely happy with this purchase and have found nothing wrong with the guide at all.It is a really nicely designed guide. That looks great, and feels great in the hand. (Plus it smells nice too.) I always buy guides for games with substantial content, as although all this information is available for free online (As every guide review in the world will tell you) I still take great joy in the physical.
Guides like this one are a prime example of why I still buy them - It's just so much nicer to sit there with a game specific, superbly designed tome as you go through the game rather than just a wall of text on a website. So, it is very superbly presented but it also has a very substantial amount of information, in fact so much so I was quite surprised at what I was missing in the game until I picked this up. I thought I was being rather thorough, but clearly not. There are a ton of hidden challenges and references in the game, a guide like this ends up becoming invaluable. The bestiary is worth special note, with great info and design. The cardboard folding Claptrap and Skag are nice additions to have, and overall I can't really fault it. For example, it might show you a 3-picture sequence of how to jump up to where you need to be, but one of the pictures is in the daytime and the others are at night - And you can't make the night pictures out very well. But again, this is just a slight gripe. Overall, a great little package that is beautifully presented in the Borderlands style jam packed filled with content. As I said earlier, once you own this it might end up becoming somewhat essential for any completionists out there!Because this was bought from Amazon of course there is no way to give feedback or complain, or to try and ensure that a replacement has all the printing it should have. Where the guide is complete it is really useful, but this has spoilt the pleasure in being able to read it from cover to cover. Brady Games as the publisher (and their printer) is at fault. I would have given the guid a 5 but this may be a problem with an entire batch of books.The only issue is that this particular copy has very tight binding, making it quite difficult to open some of the pages. I'm not sure that this is an issue with this particular copy or all of them, but if you don't want to risk it you may want want to purchase the cheaper standard edition instead.
This is no criticism of the work that has been out into this product though.Apart from that though, the Book is well laid out and is easier to follow than some stategy guides with good ideas on character builds and strategies for dealing with some of the more difficult areas. If not for the missing info in some of the tables as already mentioned, this would easily have been a 5 star review from me.As a result, we ordered the special edition for Borderlands 2, and I have to say I was a little disappointed. There wasn't as much clear guidance as there was from the original, and as a result chests were missed with other items. There was also not the same amount of recommendations on character development. There is some great detail in the book, however. As a result, we ordered the special edition for Borderlands 2, and I have to say I was a little disappointed. There wasn't as much clear guidance as there was from the original, and as a result chests were missed with other items. There was also not the same amount of recommendations on character development. There is some great detail in the book, however.If you, like me, wanted it for info on the legendary weapons and how to get them you will be disappointed. No dlc content included either ( not surprising) could do with an update.
