In draft mode it prints the pages very quickly which is to be expected but then proceeds to eject them at too high a velocity so they're all over the floor.couldn't HP incorporate a brake on the spooling when ejecting the page. I won't be buying another one that's for sure. I hadn’t used my printer for maybe two months and when my son called to say his printer wasn’t working, and he needed to print out a return label for something. I told him that my printer hadn’t been reliable lately so i needed to check to see if it was working or not. I selected something to print but the printer displayed a message: “print cartridge missing or not detected”.

I opened the ink door and checked the cartridge placement - they looked fine. I remember recently installing new ink too so that wasn’t the problem. I took them out and replaced them a few times and finally I printed something and told him i got it working again. He was happy and said he’d come over the next day but the following morning, I needed to print something for myself and I saw the same message again. Agsin, I went through the process of removing and replacing the cartridges but I couldn’t get it to work. I called my son and told him it wasn’t working again. It had worked for that one print last night but it wasn’t working again. He decided he’d use the printer at another family member’s house but their printer wasn’t working either. So he called my Mom and asked if she could print it. She said her printer was “having problems”, but if he would email her the link, she’d try it. Took the cartridges out, put them back in again. Nothing. On my PC, a message from HP Solution Center said, “Cartridge(s) Problem”, giving me three options. I could choose to “Buy now from HP”, “Buy from Online Retailers” or “Help Documents”. The top right corner of the pop up shows a diagram of two ink cartridges. The right one black (apparently full of ink) the left one white with an orange “x” on it. Oh! I thought! It’s the color cartridge that has the problem, because for this printer, the right cartridge is black ink and the left is for colored ink. I thought it was a diagnostic thing and maybe it’s telling me the color cartridge was empty (even though i was pretty sure I’d just replaced it) I checked the color cartridge and it was heavy. Definitely full of ink. What’s up HP? I tried taking it out and putting it back in again.

(so tedious and not fun) and kept trying to print but kept getting the “print cartridge missing or not detected” message, so I this error message and found a link which said to take the cartridge out and wipe the contact points of the cartridge as well the printer, with isopropyl alcohol. (I might add there is ink splattered all over inside where the ink cartridges go, I don’t know the reason for this) After I did all that, I wanted to test it to see if I fixed it, but I didn’t want to test it on a random nothing thing so I called my son and asked him to email me his return label so I could test it on that - just in case it would be good for only one print like yesterday. He emailed it, I hit “print” and put it came!!!!! He was so relieved, finally. He came over and got the label, and all was good. That is until today, when someone wanted me to print out two emails. I hit print, and print again, and it printed the two emails but the printing is not that clear, there are underlines under sentences that aren’t underlined on the email document and it smudges. Also, strangely, it printed one page twice with the text dropped down where it’s not dropped down on the email. Very weird, and not good. Plus I had ink all over my hands. I decided to reprint the email it had messed the format up on, but guess what. It decided to crap out on me again - “cartridge missing or not detected” ARGHHHH. Now I’m thinking, that HP pop up wasn’t diagnosing the problem, it might NOT be my color cartridge at all. Maybe it’s the black one. Maybe that diagram was what everyone sees, it’s not actually a diagnostic tool like I thought. I have come to the conclusion that HP dupes you into thinking it’s low ink and they just want you to buy ink like others have said.

I think it’s really a bad move of them to put that picture of an empty cartridge on that pop up, and the way the first two buttons are highlighted (glowing actually) in blue, drawing you in to buy ink (the help button is not illuminated and it’s just a quagmire of long roads that lead to no where but frustration. I think I messed up the contact points by going in there and wiping things down, hence the blurry font on the two emails I printed. Plus they printed In a kind of purpley black color. Headaches galore! HP is guilty of deception. They want to sell ink and purposely misled me into thinking my color ink needed replacing when it didn’t. (I believe I was duped last time too - probably why I replaced the ink cartridges - and I seem to remember thinking they felt like they weren’t really empty) but I had trust in HP. I purchased a Mac Book at the Apple Store and they had a deal going on where you received a free HP printer with a Mac Book purchase. Score! This printer has been so reliable from Day 1. Super easy to use. Super easy to unplug and plug back in. Easy to troubleshoot. I have had NO ISSUES with it. I scan, copy, and print. Anything more, probably not for you. I do wish I had the scanner feeder option. This one is only the one-sheet-at-a-time scanner.Over the years I have purchased the new ink cartridges and the refurbished ones. The new ones last way longer but both met my needs. All in all, I just couldn't be happier with it. (heh heh) It's lower DPI so the ink is affordable. It's an HP, it must be good. There is no way to disable it, although if you're careful you can avoid installing a lot of it. They are very small. Fortunately, they are available now in larger sizes.but this doesn't help you if you print, say, a few pages every few weeks. Every time I go to print a few things out, my black cartridge has gone bad again and the unclog feature doesn't unclog it. It frequently feeds two pages at once, well, once I get it to feed paper at all. This isn't cheap paper, although apparently it isn't the paper HP intends for me to buy from their online store. (Oh, it's user error, you bought the wrong paper. This is a serious problem if you're planning to use double-sided printing, so don't use that feature. Forget printing at an angle, I'd like for it to print something with black-and-white text while feeding every page of paper. I've hated this printer since the first day I owned it, and I still hate it now. Really I should just give it away. To an enemy. Actually, it's a fairly decent scanner. Wish I needed a scanner. (Update: with windows 7, printing simply doesn't work. Documents disappear from the printing queue and the printer just shuts down. Meli 1.0 out of 5 stars I got this printer from Apple as a rebate when I purchased my MacBook. The problems I've had are endless. At first, the color cartridge that came with the printer wouldn't print all colors, so whenever I printed anything with even a smidge of color (even one highlighted word), the entire print job would come out in bright red. After 3 hours on the phone with tech support, they sent me a new cartridge, which took three weeks to arrive.

Copying on the printer is ridiculously slow, and every time you change the cartridges, you have to align the cartridge - which requires scanning, which my printer was not able to do consistently (regardless of what computer, if any, it was hooked up to). Talk about over-engineering and needlessly complex. The final straw came for me when I had to purchase another new cartridge from Staples (and they are expensive!) to replace the outdated cartridge. Everything prints and scans fine, and then the printer proceeds to jam with card stock. Mind you, I've printed hundreds of cards on this printer over the year - the same stock, and now it jams all of the time. Customer service was laughable and useless. I'm printing instead off of my old HP 970c and am planning to buy a new printer - Epson or something better. BE WARNED and don't buy an HP. Troubleshooting for it was very easy, but I am a technical person by trade so this may not be true for others. I am also the type of person where if I really wanted professional and high quality pictures printed, I would most likely go to a photo store like Walgreens, Snapfish or something else, but the times I have printed pictures on my own (as I do have my own gloss and matte pictures) they haven't been bad. While shopping for it, I found a cellphone someone had lost. I tracked the owner down and drove to his place of work to return it.

I even refused a small reward. But when I got back to my car, someone had broken into it and stolen my car stereo. They left my HP C4280 printer in the back seat. I guess they knew better than to steal a piece of junk. This printer worked fine for me for a while, then one day (after about 6 months of non-use) it didn't. The display screen stopped working and the printer ink expired earlier than expected. Then I hopped on Amazon.com to read the customer reviews of this product. Holy crap -- I was certainly not alone in my misery. Fortunately, all-in-ones are not horrifically expensive nowadays. I can replace this one without breaking the bank.
