It’s great for golfing, but how useful is it for those hunters out there. Let’s take a look and find out. Inside the box, you’ll find the following contents: That’s assuming a large, highly reflective target, of course. For deer and other smaller targets, I’ve found it’s only truly useful out to about 175 yards. Beyond that, the 5X magnification isn’t quite powerful enough to get a good bead on your prey. I wish the accuracy was a bit more dead-on, but getting a range to within a yard is halfway decent. There’s just a single button, and not many features to wade through. Just point at your intended target, push the button, and you get the range to that object.

The device’s 21mm objective lens provides a fair bit of light gathering room, and you’ll enjoy a 367 foot field of view from 1,000 yards. For eyeglass wearers, you’ll love the 21mm eye relief, along with the diopter adjustment. It utilizes an internal rechargeable lithium ion battery. Unfortunately, this does mean you have to charge up the battery before you can use it, so don’t expect to unbox the rangefinder and get straight to work with it. It takes about six to eight hours to get a full charge, and that will only last you about 14 hours of continuous use — even less if you use the GPS function a lot. It’s designed for golfers, after all, not hunters. The GPS functionality is almost entirely useless in the hunting fields, since it’s only intended to give you precise distances between different features of golf courses. This is very useful if you’re using the rangefinder at a shooting range to confirm distances, since you can just mount it on your tripod and have it at the ready. You’ll be able to see your prey even in low-light conditions, but don’t count on being able to read the LCD display with the range to your target. Image clarity is quite good, and you’ll find yourself using this rangefinder as much as a 5X monocular as you do a rangefinder. What’s even nicer is how quickly the Hybrid’s Pinseeker mode is able to lock onto just about any target and get you the range to that object. The optics chamber hasn’t been nitrogen-purged and the lenses aren’t O-ring sealed, so don’t expect this model to be fogproof and waterproof. It’s not. In short, this is a rangefinder that’s probably best handled with kid gloves. This is a great little unit for golfing, but it lacks most of the features that hunters look for. If you are hoping to get the best of both worlds, you won't find that here, but you can use this as a barebones hunting rangefinder with plenty of extra usefulness on the golf course.

Front, centre, back measurements to the green, custom points and 3D graphic layouts of each hole plus shot distance and scorecard tracking. Yes, I know Bushnell did have a go at this in 2012 with a product of the same name, but it didn't take off as it had all the visual appeal of a 1980s mobile phone. The pairing process was not the slickest I have experienced but eventually it got the job done. This gives you all you need to know in a single glance and is the major benefit of the combined approach. You also get the Jolt vibration when the laser locks on to the flag so you know that you are aiming at the right target. The smaller the GPS aerial in terms of size and power, the less accurate it will be, which is why mobile phones don't do as well for golf as larger handheld GPS devices.

It’s a nice concept, but we look forward to future generations with greater integration between the GPS and rangefinder functions. Setting up an account is reasonably straightforward. If you don’t register within 45 days, the GPS portion of the Hybrid will stop functioning until you do. The necessary steps include:Click allow, and the sync will begin. The initial process is accomplished in minutes. The time required for subsequent syncs is dependent on how many courses need to be pushed to the device, but it never took more than a few minutes. And just a small applet to sync latest course data. The Hybrid’s overall ranking was just a hair lower in the Best New course category than others. The font size of the yardages was sufficient, but the font size for the menu options is a bit small. Users can then select from a list of 10 courses ordered by proximity to their location, or choose to manually search for a course. If you select to “Play Golf” before satellites are acquired, you will only have the option to manually search. The device won’t prompt the user for a starting hole, but rather defaults to the 1st hole. Given how quickly you can advance between holes, this doesn’t cause any issues if you happen to be playing the back 9 or participating in a shotgun tournament. An LCD display at the bottom of the screen will show the yardage. The eyepiece can be rotated focus the viewfinder. On the down side, magnification is limited to 5x. Bushnell claims up to 14-16 hours of battery life, so you can expect to squeeze out multiple rounds in between charges.

It would be ideal to see the GPS distances displayed within the rangefinder’s viewfinder, or conversely, the GPS screen could show the most recent laser reading. Either method would provide some context between the position of the pin and the front and back of the green. Both text-only hole views are accessible by pressing the “screen” button:There were often only 2-3 points mapped per hole, although users can custom map their own points to fill any empty slots in the allocated 4 points per hole, or write over pre-mapped points. The rangefinder does not have a “panning” function, whereby one can get distances to different targets by holding the button down, so if you want to scope out a number of points, you will have to aim and shoot multiple times. The Hybrid’s PinSeeker mode is meant to make life easy for the user in those situations where the target has other objects close behind it, like a flagstick with trees behind it (note that despite its name, PinSeeker mode can be used to determine distances to targets other than a flagstick). PinSeeker mode identifies when there are multiple objects being picked up within the crosshairs and ignores the background targets even though they may be larger and thus more reflective. The Hybrid displays a small icon of a flagstick in the lower left of the display when PinSeeker is has locked on to the closest of multiple objects (the user doesn’t have to activate this functionality, it is always “on”). Once the device has located the closest of the targets in the area of the aiming circle, it will display a circle around the flagstick icon and show the distance to the closest object. For more on the specific features of the laser rangefinder portion of the Hybrid, see our Bushnell Hybrid laser rangefinder review. When measuring shot distances, both the shot distance and the distance to the center of the green will be displayed on the screen. Shot distance data is not saved by the Hybrid for later review.

The Bushnell Hybrid does not track any scores or statistics. While the auto-advance does work the majority of the time, we found a number of occasions where the Hybrid didn’t recognize that we were on the next hole and we needed to manually advance by pushing the “up” arrow. Course maps were accurate with the exception of one course that was remodeled approximately 5 years ago (a popular resort course), where the Bushnell Hybrid displayed distances to bunkers that no longer exist, and lacked distances to new bunkers. One green that has been modified in the past year did not have updated distances. Bushnell (via iGolf) provides course updates at no additional cost through the iGolf.com site (which requires a free registration). While we think the idea of a combination device is great (and these devices will probably support premium pricing), the lack of any real integration between the GPS and rangefinder functions and the absence of features such as score tracking and statistics make the value of the Hybrid only moderately compelling. This is probably the first “hybrid” that I experienced in my lifetime. It’s not chocolate flavored peanut butter, or peanut butter flavored chocolate. Instead, what you have is a combination of the two confections, each adding their individual elements to the hybrid treat. What was combined to make that club. Long iron performance with wood forgiveness. Ultimately the reason that we carry hybrids when we play is that the hybrid’s combined features produce a club that we hit better than the corresponding iron or wood.Following in the hybrid tradition, the Bushnell Hybrid takes the functionalities of a laser rangefinder and a GPS rangefinder and puts them together in a single unit. I assume that Bushnell’s goal was to produce a unit that takes the best features of the laser and GPS and in doing so provide golfers with a tool that was greater than the sum of its parts. They are shooting for the peanut butter cup of rangefinders.

Now I am no electrical engineer (kudos to any reading this), but it seemed logical that a unit that combined the innards of a GPS and a laser would end up larger than either individual unit. This is where you hold the unit and where you would experience most of the bulkiness in the unit. Instead, the unit feels very compact. It feels significantly more compact than the Bushnell 1600 laser that I reviewed previously ( HERE ). The rubber molding at the top and the bottom provide a pleasant texture and promote one-handed operation of the laser. It is almost in direct contrast to the innovation of the product. It doesn’t use bright, look-at-me colors to draw attention to itself. It’s a classy and professional looking unit. Even this though does not make the unit feel bulky and cumbersome. Nice large display and easy to push buttons. It is a good basic unit. One of the great features of the case is that it has both zippered and magnetic closures. The magnets are strong enough to keep it closed while walking, while providing quicker access than you would have unzipping it each time. In person, the aesthetics and ergonomics of the unit are excellent. The case is great. The USB charging port is easy to access and seals tight when not in use. However these “shortcomings” are more my personal preferences than faults of the Hybrid unit. The GPS in the Hybrid is essentially the same. I can say the same for the Hybrid GPS. Front, back, and middle distances were within a couple of yards of the laser reading. I do wish that there were more distances to hazards included stock, but these can be added by the user during play (up to four points per hole). No problem with satellite communication, providing you give it about 5-10 minutes at the beginning of the round to acquire them. I do like a few more frills in my GPS though. Scoring, intermediate distances, club suggestion, and such are not part of this unit. Again, these are my wants in a GPS.

The laser is nice and fast, both to power on and to provide the distance measurement. Not the fault of the unit, it’s not designed for slope. I just like having the slope reading. I don’t play in tournaments where the slope feature would get me disqualified. My other laser has the slope and it was something that I missed as I used the Hybrid. Maybe there will be a slope version of the Hybrid in Bushnell’s 2012 offerings. I like just taking a quick glance to know approximate yardage for these shots. I will then laser the flag to get the actual distances on approach shots. Obviously, before the Hybrid, this required two separate pieces of equipment. I really do think that this is the best of both worlds. I like the GPS side for the less precise measurements, and the laser when I want to know exact distance. I don’t blame this on the GPS side of the unit as much as the groundskeepers. GPS side gives a great idea of the depth of the green, and the laser tells you the pin distance. Perfect combination. There are no green topography maps or flyovers provided by the GPS and the laser gives you slope-free distance. Still though, by combining these two simple tools, Bushnell has produced a rangefinder that provides more than enough data to make the correct club selection and a confident shot in the majority of playing situations. Plug it in and it will tell you when it is charged. The charge is good for a couple of rounds. A bit longer even if you don’t power up the GPS side of the unit. Yes the laser side will work with the GPS turned off. Get into the habit of plugging it in before you go out, or after. I forgot this once and was left with a rangefinder free round. Sort of a bummer at that point that I couldn’t just pop in a fresh battery. I think that the rechargeable nature of the unit is better in the long run though, as long as you remember to charge it. But we have found better prices on the units!

www.fishinnj.com/userfiles/files/Drizair-1200-Service-Manual.pdf

Still though, I think that a little premium for the Hybrid is still worth it. By having the GPS and the laser in the same unit, I found that I actually used both components more frequently than when I have both separate ones. Often times I forget to consult my GPS after I turn it on. The Hybrid allows a player to take quick glances at the GPS for distance or laser targets as required. If you don’t currently own either type of rangefinder, then the Hybrid is definitely something you should consider in your purchase. If you are a GPS user who wants to move to a laser though, take a long look at the Hybrid. It will cost a bit more than dedicated lasers, but I think that you will appreciate the inclusion of the GPS. If you are currently using a GPS with an annual subscription cost, be sure to take this into account when deciding to buy or not. The Hybrid is comfortable and easy to use. It provides accurate readings and should help any golfer to play a more accurate game of golf. We want you to get the most out of yourThat means providing you with equipment reviews you can trust,He told me a laser would improve my game because I would learn my distances better. I bought the hybrid as soon as it came out. I still use it and with the combination is great. I give my friends the distance to the flag followed by the center of green from the gps. It tells me whether the flag is front middle or back. Also if the flag is not visible due to obstructions I can at least know the center of green by the gps. My guys love it. It really speeds up play. Still working on original battery. I get at least 3 rounds in before recharging. Making you register is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. I have now returned the unit twice because both times I registered the product it deletes all the preloaded courses. I have spoken to igolf about 10 times about the issue and they have no idea how to fix it and claim files just randomly become corrupted.

They constantly say contact bushnell for warrant work. Huh? the product is brand new, and this has happened twice. I followed the instructions that igolf sent word for word. I would say that igolf is quite possibly the worst customer service provider I have every dealt with and unfortunately its a must register with this unit.Worked fine for 3 months then died. Now wont charge, wont light up, laser doesn’t work. I treated the device perfectly. Absolutely do not buy this piece of junk. Now it is just an expensive not so good GPS unit.Assuming it was the battery, I called to see if it would be “an arm and a leg” to replace it. Initial customer rep was extremely unhelpful, saying he didn’t know the cost to replace the battery. If not, I will go with the previously described approach of a garmin gps watch for tee to green distance, and a separate laser rangefinder for approach shots. Warranty was for 1 year only. I returned it to get repaired but Bushnell said the battery was stuffed and the battery is not replaceable on the hybrid. Bushnell said it was just bad luck and they did not want to know me.Re-updated my unit several times out of spite to no avail. This is seriously annoying when you want to buzz the front edge of a pot, the cart girl’s boobies etc. Battery died and the factory wanted an arm and leg to replace it. What is the website for the batteries? The number I used of my battery is getting no hits using Google search. Registered but it gets stuck on sync device The GPS wasn’t value-added for me, especially after noting the inaccuracies vs.GPS is only as accurate as the info input. Turns out this is not always correct. Perhaps a course has been remodeled, or maybe the info is just off a bit.You were spot on with the information. These are easy to use and remove a little more of the doubt we have when hitting approach shots to greens. Lets face it to remove a little doubt can be a big thing when your getting closer to the pin.

This will ensure you update the courses and register the product. There aren’t many of them out there. I thought about this a few years ago. I use a laser currently and often times you can’t hit hazards such as creeks, blind bunkers, etc. I like the ability to add your own points on a specific course, but when you sync up or update the unit, those points are deleted. Hopefully Bushnell will add a few features in the newer units. Probably money well spent though. That is something that definitely needs to be fixed. Seems silly to lose all of that data.If not there, it would have been through the Golf Galaxy website when I clicked on the product. Learn how your comment data is processed. TheNexus Laser Rangefinder gives you exact distances to the flag making club selection simple and consistent. I had used an entry level Bushnell range finder for years and wanted to upgrade to a better one. Glad I took my time and found this rangefinder. I like that it's made in the USA plus it does what I want: give me yardages without picking up trees and mounds behind the pin. I especially like the target lock feature and the 6x magnification. Finds the flag quickly and other targets also. Verisign. The high capacity Lithium Ion battery provides an amazing 8 hours of runtime on high mode and up to 32 hours on low mode. I can’t imagine using this on a target a 100 yards away. The sighter does have set screws to adjust the lens but why pay that much for something that I had to calibrate myself right out of the box. Easy to set up. To shut off I place the clear pl!stic disc between battery; turning the housing dose not work. Lazer discribes an oval when turned in bore. Also a great way to check accuracy before a hunt while traveling. Not only airlines handling your weapon but rough roads, and the occassional hard bump or drop, even if the gun is in a hard case. A quick check and no apprehention to squeezing off that round! I gave it four stars instead of five, simply due to it being a little weak when used in bright light at 75 yrds, when sighting my rifle. The arbors provide a versatility for most furearm applications. Overall, an excellent value for the money. Recommended on that basis. This definitely goes past that, not only does it get you on paper, but it gets you within a few inches of your actual zero at 25 yards. You can then push out from there to a further yardage very easily and quickly.
