Richard Napier 3.0 out of 5 stars I found the content of value and judgements sound. I appreciate the need for brevity but this was almost too much sometimes. I was however a little surprised by the lack of depth regarding the Siebel application itself. But I should state again that this could be my own misinterpretation of what the book sets out to do. I still enjoyed it and reading it, learned a lot. I have been in and around Siebel for a long time and this was an excellent summary. The result is a thorough and experience-based book that transcends the product view and includes some bona-fide CRM best practices. As of the most recent Forrester Wave Report for Customer Relationship Management applications, Oracle’s Siebel CRM is still quite a way ahead of its competition. This is despite the fact that around 2011-2012, Oracle invested heavily in the Fusion CRM stack, which unfortunately did not stand up well against the competition. In early 2013, Oracle restarted the development on the In early 2013, Oracle restarted the development on the Siebel application stack and has been consistently delivering enhancements to the application year on year as Innovation Packs. The key change has been the deployment of the Open UI architecture.

This came out with the Siebel Version 8.1.1.9, or patchset 9, on top of Siebel version 8.1.1. The open UI architecture dramatically changed the user perception around the Siebel UI, since this effectively made Siebel browser independent, moving away from the previous dependence on Internet Explorer. The earlier dependence was primarily because the Siebel High interactivity client was heavily dependent on Active X controls. Over the last few years as Oracle launched the Innovation Packs (IP 2015 is the current one), this dependency has been done away with. The biggest of the changes is that with IP 2015, Siebel tools, a thick client used for any kind of development, has now becoming Siebel composer, a web-based tool similar to most of the development clients for Cloud CRMs (this is still in a beta version in IP 2015 but is a step in the right direction). This will significantly reduce development and deployment times and will finally allow for zero downtime deployments as is common with most cloud applications. This is only officially supported on IE 8.0. IE 8.0 is no longer supported by Microsoft. While there are ways to make the HI framework work on IE 9 and higher, these are not supported by Oracle. As per recent updates, Microsoft is no longer supporting any IE version and instead only supports their newer Edge browser. This led to customizations in terms of new tables, business components, business objects and the relevant UI objects on top of these. The new objects effectively make the custom objects redundant. Siebel, over the last few versions, has been reducing the dependence on scripting and increasing the dependence on workflows. These are available out of the box. The newer version has a lot of this business logic by default. As an example, the address model has been completely changed. In versions prior to Siebel 8.0, Siebel had a concept of maintaining business addresses (Account Address) and personal addresses (Contact Address) separately.

This was changed completely by having one common address table and maintaining intersection tables and the relevant joins for accounts and contacts. The organizations must migrate to Siebel industry applications (SIA). The answer, however, is not that simple. Based on the previous section, let’s weigh the pros and cons of both. While these do get upgraded, it makes sense to use the vanilla objects. The primary reason being that the inherent business processes around these vanilla objects have been tuned for performance. More importantly, these processes will get upgraded in future releases based on customer feedback. There are user properties and the data validation manager available for the same purpose. The scripts (especially Siebel VB Script) do not get upgraded properly and can lead to significant performance issues as well. Trying to get rid of the scripts by going through lines and lines of code and setting up corresponding rules is an exercise which is best left alone, as it adds a lot of delays to the upgrade project. Again these vanilla objects are tuned for performance and will always get upgraded with future releases. The upgrade will force the change. This leads to a lot of effort in changing the existing setup by identifying every single entity which is accessing the old structure. This is primarily because of the fact that it has to be treated as a new implementation. The new business processes will not be taken up as effectively the application will still have the old custom code but under a new hood. For these customers the ideal way would be to undertake an in-place upgrade rather than a reimplementation. The next few articles describe the actual upgrade process. From versioning to Continuous integration and repeatable deployments, Redgate Deploy enables Continuous delivery of database changes for SQL Server, Oracle and 18 other databases.

You may be approached by companies that have heard about you and think they might want to do business with you, but do these leads really represent opportunities. How much of your time should be spent finding out.Oracle offers lifetime support on any Siebel version post version 8.0 (launched in February 2007). As of Siebel 15 (Innovation Pack 2015), almost all of the Active X controls have been replaced by Java scripts as a part of the Open UI enablement. An audit trail item is a record showing who has accessed a record, which operation was performed, when it was performed and how the value was changed. In Siebel 8.x data captured by Audit Trail functionality is stored in an encoded form in the Siebel database in order to maximise the performance of the overall Siebel application. This document sets out to assist customers who wish to export this data for use in other applications, for example a Data Warehouse. It describes the use of the functionality of the Audit Trail Item 2 Virtual Business Component (VBC) to decode the data as part of a wider solution to send the decoded data to any downstream system.Other Options Some customers have previously undertaken efforts to manually decode audit data from the underlying database tables for use in their own applications. While this approach might be suitable for a small number of scenarios it is essential to note that the encoded format used in this table is an internal format and is subject to change without notice.

Customers undertaking to design their own decoding logic must understand that they risk their solution being negatively affected by any future changes to this format. Oracle strongly recommends that customers use the VBC included as part of the Siebel application in order to decode their audit data; this VBC will be updated to reflect any changes in the underlying data structure. Decoding Siebel 8.x Audit Trail data Page 3 LOGICAL DESIGN Structure The flow of logic in any solution decoding audit data is very dependent on the use to which that data is put. Some customers, implementing an archival solution, may wish to simply read all created records (potentially destructively) whereas other, more data oriented, use cases may demand finer grained control of the data. The high level flow for reconstructing data is given below. This flow may be modified in order to restrict the data returned, by BC, user, position etc.The final Write out decoded step is entirely dependant on a customers specific requirements and could range from writing to a custom table in the Siebel database to sending the decoded data to an external data using one of the EAI Transports; as this step is so specific it will not be considered here.Triggering The triggering for this flow is key to the solution. Two options will present themselves to any team considering such an approach. The first is some form of reactive trigger, be that through runtime events or workflow policies. If the use case that is being designed for requires real-time or near-real-time onward transmission of the audit trail data then this solution may have to be considered. However, developers are urged to consider that the volume of transactions occuring on the audit tables is understandably very high and so any per record solution may cause unwanted performance effects on the overall performance of Decoding Siebel 8.x Audit Trail data Page 4 the Siebel application.

Certainly for any deployment making use of reactive triggering on audit data, extensive performance profiling is essential. For any scenario that does not demand real-time data transmission an asynchronous batch approach using a mechanism such as Repeating Component Requests (or similar) can be considered. These can be tuned and adjusted so that the frequency of the job matches the data and performance requirements of the system and in many cases can be timed to occur at periods of reduced activity in the system. This then is the recommended approach for the majority of use cases.IMPLEMENTATION Either a custom Business Service in conjunction with a Workflow Process, or a Workflow Process on its own could be used to implement this type of functionality. This practical book offers a comprehensive understanding of Siebel CRM. It is your safe vessel for navigating the deep waters of Siebel installation and system management. This book is a complete exercise in installing and managing Oracle’s Siebel CRM for your organization. You will understand the Siebel architecture and install it piece by piece. In easy-to-follow chapters, the book will guide you through the installation of Siebel server, client and third-party reporting software on Microsoft Windows and Linux, covering everything from the planning the process and software download to the installation and configuration tasks. After reading this book, you will feel fully prepared for setting up multiple servers and multi-lingual configurations. Another benefit of this book is that it teaches administrators how to establish system monitoring strategies to identify and avoid performance bottlenecks. When you have finished the book, you will feel prepared to install and manage Oracle’s Siebel CRM in a real-world environment. In addition, you will know some tricks that even seasoned experts will envy.

Whether you consider yourself a seasoned IT professional or a beginner: once we add concepts such as load balancing or multiple language deployment, it is easy to get lost. The reason why you are reading this book might have been stated above. In this book, we are going to follow a typical Siebel CRM installation procedure. Additionally, we will look under the hood and learn how to manage all those different pieces of software. Understanding the building blocks of Oracle's Siebel CRM applications as well as knowing how to avoid general pitfalls during installation and system management are of course great benefits. We can then execute our Siebel CRM projects more quickly and subsequently with less cost and risk. When you finish this book, you will not only be able to successfully master the installation and system management procedures, you will also have the advantage of a deep understanding of the intricacies of Siebel CRM.
