Jason Duell 5.0 out of 5 stars That said, I'm confused as to why Amazon doesn't show you that there's a newer edition available: It's got a lot of good data in it. However there is one thing that I'm finding really annoying. There are a lot of tables in the book and you cannot magnify them. I don't know if the blame should be laid at Amazon's feet or the publisher for using images for tables instead of text. What I can say is that it's a very difficult to read some times and ruins the over all useability of the book. For this lack of foresight I'm dinging the book 2stars (for the Kindle version).I am a licensed master captain with decades of experience running and repairing boats. I also run an offshore fishing and diving charter boat (ORION - Out to Sea Adventures - Port Aransas, TX). Unfortunately, if it can break on a boat I have had to fix it. There are other good books out there and some may go into more detail on certain topics but if you do not own and read this book first you are doing yourself a disservice. I also am a consultant to many vessel owners and have sent this book to them as a reference. It has saved many of them thousands of dollars. Even if you are not doing the work yourself this book can really help you understand what you are talking about when you hire someone and inspect their work. When we conducted the marine survey, our surveyor recommended that we immediately get this Nigel Calder book, and proceed to read it cover to cover. So, we did! Well, we are not through reading it but have already found it to be an indispensible resource to understanding the systems on the boat, and what we will need to do to maintain it, and make repairs when needed.Drift for days? Or fix the problem and move on. Maybe your ignition coil burned out. This IS the Ultimate boat owner's user guide.Since there are limits to the checkbook I figured that if I was going to own a boat I better know what it is I'm getting into. I have learned so many things about what I bought after reading this book that had I bought this book before I bought the boat, I would not be the owner of this particular boat. Before the Spring season gets here and boating is back, I will have a brand new running machine with the help of this book. There is hope!It helped us many times with many different repairs and it helped the friend on day two when he had an engine problem. I consider it essential for any sailor who must be self-sufficient.In the day of U-Tubing resolutions, it’s still good to have this book within reach, AND on the boat!So easy to understand some of the finer 'leccy problems which have been bugging me for a possible half-century, oft at great expence. Also modern generation and supply, and all the modern dash-board info. I have long since mourned the death of dash-board ammeters, induction pressures, etc.

I could have saved so many ?thousands in the past 50 years. This book is by far the most comprehensive practical book on the subject, better than John C Payne's and Geoffrey O'Connell's offerings which I also have. It gives detailed and comprehensive explanations that will ensure you not only know what to do to test, install or repair something but also understand how it works. The content is truly comprehensive and makes fascinating reading, or just browsing. I don't imagine anyone simply reading this cover to cover as it is more of a reference book. The level of detail in many cases is astonishing - for example I've learned so much about battery technology, the pros and cons of different battery technologies, why we need different battery characteristics for starter battery and ship's battery. 41 pages are devoted to this topic including the techniques for selecting, sizing, designing, and installing the basic battery charging and regulating systems. A further 25 pages then cover the additional specifics for energy intensive boats.Hopefully this gives a reasonable indication of the level of detail, the research, and information contained within it's covers. Amazing value for money. We are complete novices re-fitting a 116 year old barge and having to do all the work ourselves. It takes a lot of reading and re-reading to get our heads round some of the complicated electrical stuff but the information is all there, complete with diagrams. The best thing is, not only are the explanations of HOW to do it comprehensive but also the reasons WHY you need to do it. Absolutely brilliant.I do regret buying the Kindle version now and I'm buying the paperback for Xmas, I think it'll be easier to make notes and highlight the sections useful to me. Scubacarole 5.0 out of 5 stars He starts out on the subject of batteries - and over 15 pages later he still had more to say. Photographs of various stages of failure of boat components show what to watch for as a boat owner. Excellent detail, down to Ohm's law and calculations for the flow of electrons as a measurement of amperes - stuff I took in College Physics classes many moons ago - to simple things that many just forget to do.

His troubleshooting flowcharts are the kind of thinking process mechanically inclined folks can appreciate, which he does on every major component on powered or sail vessels. Amazing detail and extras like how to jerry-rigged a DC rectifier in a blown-out condition enough to get you back safely to shore. This is where we'll be keeping this one once I'm done reading at home. If you have room for only one mechanical book, other than your owners manual, this is the one I would choose! Are you listening, Nigel?:-)It will be aboard for many years. If you have a sailing boat, and it has a motor and electrical equipment of any sort, you should buy this book. Should there be a problem of a mechanical or electrical nature, with the knowledge contained here you will be less lost, less helpless. I can recommend that it is kept close, on board, well protected, and not to be lent to anyone else. But this one definitely qualifies. If you have an electrical or mechanical problem start here. Lots of good, well explained information for those of use who are not experts. This book was a great help in redoing my electrical system, as well as helping me understand numerous systems on my boat. Calder covers how things work, limitations, purchase and design considerations, integration with other systems and practical pros and cons. Would I buy this again. ABSOLUTELY-I can recommend this book with no limitations.I can now use jargon like Amp-hours, Equalizing, parallel hookups and etc.I am an informed consumer. I replaced anxiety about ignorance with information. Thanks Nigel Caulder.I own an inboard diesel. I saw where others were not as happy with it that owned gas.

Groups Discussions Quotes Ask the Author Author Nigel Calder explains how the systems work, helps you troubleshoot and identify problems, and presents cle. Stein To see what your friends thought of this book,This book is not yet featured on Listopia.I was eagerly awaiting the book before beginning to install and wire in all the 12v DC devices, including bilge pumps, navigations lights and - well I have a list of 12 items to go on that system. At the moment I received the book, however I was (am) looking for best practices and smart hacks for replacing my shifter cables for my Dana outdrives. At the moment I received the book, however I was (am) looking for best practices and smart hacks for replacing my shifter cables for my Dana outdrives. River Queen is out of business, and Dana - the outdrive manufacturer - is too, I do believe. No throttle cables. No shifter cables! Dang!! Well, here's to hoping everything ELSE I need is in this Mechanical and Electrical Manual. Our fridge died a couple of times during our 4-year sailing trip and Nigel rescued us (and all of our precious frozen meat). When lightening surrounded us, we consulted Nigel for tips to avoid an strike. I highly recommend his books for anyone who plans to cast off for a bluewater adventure.
