Weber 3.0 out of 5 stars I have no idea why that is in the description. It is a regularly bound book. It would be nice if it were loose leaf with a spiral binding so it would stay open while you worked with the camera, but that isn't the case. Second, I was looking forward to more detail to help clarify the dismal Olympus documentation, especially about the menu structure and the meaning of the many options. But the author doesn't provide it. Except the chart he presents has no color coding, and is similar to and as confusing as the Olympus chart. For instance, when Mode 1 half press focus for S-AF is listed as S-AF, what exactly does that mean. Is S-AF locked then, or not. It's not clear in the Olympus manual, nor is it here, as the context or action related to the terms used is never explained. Also, some of the material seems like boilerplate from other books. Issues around available light shooting, like noise due to higher ISO, are not explored in depth. I would like to know what the author considered a maximum usable ISO, under various shooting conditions, and what related noise reduction settings should be used, but this wasn't covered. Overall, I feel this is an average book about an excellent camera. There is some useful content, and the author's style makes it easy to read.
But I still have many unanswered questions, which I guess I'll just have to explore by trial and error using lots of test shots.The impression I get is that this book was rushed to the publisher. Also, some info is not presented in a clear, accurate way. For example, his instructional steps for using SUPER FP Flash Mode (see page 307) are complicated and I could not get them to work following his method. However, I discovered it was easy to configure using the mode button and rotating dial on the FL-600R flash unit. Unfortunately, there are several others. In addition, in several places in the book, the author states that he would share his camera settings. I have read the book cover to cover and the author did not really fulfill this promise. I also have a Myset set up for landscapes. I really wanted to compare the author's settings to mine but there is no way to do that. Another example of misinformation: On pages 350 and 351, the author sings the praises of BreezeBrowser as a raw utility. That's great but when I checked the BreezeBrowser website, the E-M1 is NOT listed as a supported camera. So, why is this included in this book? (Was this information lifted from another camera book and just carried over to this one?) Based on the very positive comments from some other reviewers, I wonder how much time they have spent actually reading this book. I cannot recommend this book to inexperienced photographers. Mr. Friedman does an excellent job of explaining the camera settings and his personal camera settings. (I have no connection to Mr. Friedman.)And at the moment, it is the only book available for the EM-1. The book is far from perfect, however. It could have been so much better. I have two main gripes with the book; the first concerns the writing style. In my opinion, the book wasn't written, as much as it was dictated.
There is a difference, as you may know, between speaking and writing -- when you talk, you use more interjections, as thoughts pop into your heard and you attempt to get them out. Listeners are not readers, so it is not surprising that readers have trouble parsing the pauses that come between spoken phrases, just as you, dear reader, are stumbling over these past few sentences. The book really needed a pair of editors: one to organize the stream-of-consciousness writing style, and one to check and correct all of the technical details. A lot of it was copied-and-pasted from David's other books. This was not necessarily a bad thing: most camera books are going to have a lot of common information, and copying-and-pasting general material from one book to another is a fine way to work smarter without working harder. Problems arise, however, when you are lazy and don't check the information you are copying to make sure it is appropriate for the new book. Specifically, information that only pertains to a DSLR camera has no place in a mirrorless camera book. Since the EM-1 is a mirrorless camera, any copied material needs to be inspected and possibly modified before it is included. Despite my gripes, I am grateful to David and Dan for writing this book. The OM-D EM-1 is a very complicated camera, and the authors did a pretty good job of explaining all of its features. I just wish the technical editor had done a better job so I hadn't found so many errors. You can also navigate to a menu by rotating the rear dial, which would be faster than repeatedly pressing the down arrow. Canon DSLRs use the above mentioned metering modes. The EM-1's metering modes are Digital ESP metering, Center weighted averaging metering, Spot metering, Spot metering-Highlight, and Spot metering-Shadow. The book is aware of the update (see, for example, page 354, Official Firmware). Page 42 Step 4.
After turning the camera on, the camera displays a menu, consisting of Storage, MTP, Print, or Exit (the camera can be set to default to one of these via Menu D, USB Menu). For most applications, select Storage and press the OK button. For or Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 Windows Photo Gallery, select MTP and press the OK button. Page 51 Arrow Keys - Touch Screen Lock The text describes the White Balance function. If you assign the Touch Screen Lock function to an arrow key, when the arrow key is pressed, the touch panel toggles between enabled and disabled. Page 54 Underneath Your EM-1 No mention of the battery compartment, although it is called out in the figure. Although Davie explains Focus Stacking on page 130, in the example he had to manually set the focus. I was actually disappointed to discover that the EM-1 does not support focus stacking, a feature that Canon included in my S-95 point-and-shoot. Page 69 Getting a handle of Exposure The images in Figure 4.2 are stacked left and right, not top and bottom. Page 77 Choosing a Metering Method Hi Spot should be Spot metering-highlight. Shadow Spot should be Spot metering-shadow. CAPE: Nikon cameras have an AF-ON button, but the EM-1 does not. However, with this setting you will not be able to access the Flash Intensity control or the Flash menu by pressing the AF button. To be fair, a telephoto image-stabilized lens might do a better job of reducing shake than the camera. But in general, one of the advantages of a camera with like the EM-1 with built-in image stabilization is that you don't need to pay extra for image-stabilized lenses. One of these numbers is not correct. The Em-1 does have Sequential High and Sequential Low modes. In these modes, the camera takes about 10 and 6.5 pictures per second, respectively (you can change the number of pictures via Custom Menu C, H fps and L fps).
CAPE 2: The viewfinder does not display the number of maximum number of shots you can take, regardless of the shooting mode. The EM-1 manual, Chapter 5, Basic operations, page 35, details the information displayed by the viewfinder and does not show number of shots you can take, only the number of shots you can store on the memory card. Page 166 Timed exposures Anther CAPE. The lists of preset shutter speeds are wrong. On the EM-1, the shutter speeds do not vary with exposure adjustment increments. In Manual mode the same shutter speeds are available, plus Live Bulb and Live Time. The settings are displayed on the Electronic View Finder or the Monitor. The book variously refers to the display on the rear of the camera as the touch screen, the LCD, the LCD monitor, or the LCD status panel, but Olympus refers to it as the Monitor. However, the EM-1 does not currently support that capability. I could not find any. Perhaps this was a printing error. However, I believe in the picture on the front cover shows it mounted on the camera. The concept is described in the next section, Adjusting White Balance. There is nothing on adjusting white balance bracketing in Chapter 4. Chapter 4 does mention Chapter 8, which does explain white balance bracketing. This is the first time curtains have been mentioned in the book. The flash mode settings were actually introduced earlier in Chapter 11, starting on page 294. Page 302 Flash Sync Speed in AV Mode Another CAPE. AV (or Av) mode is the name Canon uses for Aperture-priority mode. First go to Shooting Menu 2, RC Mode, and make sure the value is set to ON. Exit the menu and press the OK button. If the External Flash Function Setting menu does not appear, press the INFO button until it does. Page 315 Snoots and Barn Doors The book does not include a picture of a snoot, but you can find pictures of them in the Amazon camera department.

Pg 370 Using the Olympus Image Share App Olympus has made some significant changes to the app since the book was written. Check the book's website for possible updates. The choices are ON and OFF. If you've made it this far, you deserve a treat: John Foster has done a spectacular job of explaining the myriad menu settings in the EM-1, as well as suggesting which options to change and why.They are both very good and there are sections on memory cards, dust on sensors etc.Both expand on the respective Manuals which is especially important with The OMD-EM1 as the PDF Olympus manual is so labyrinthine. Despite having used the camera for around 9 months, this guide clarified one or two points that I didn't realise I could do. However the description of Geotagging is a little ambiguous. When discussing using the camera's built in WiFi with Olympus OI Share on a smart phone for geotagging, the author states that geotags can only be added at the time of image creation and that you cannot apply them afterwards.This is not the case as far as I have found. You switch on the OI Share app and enable geotagging: the camera times when a photograph was taken; the smartphone records a track with timing using its GPS; OI Share puts the two together later using the WiFi connection between the camera and the phone. As long as you don't delete the track in the phone, the geotags can be added at anytime. In fact this is the only way it works. If the camera WiFi is linked to the phone, I find that I cannot take a photograph without switching WiFi off. If he meant that your smartphone must be picking up the GPS signal as you cannot add a location later, of course you can. Adobe Lightroom will do this if you can remember where the photo was taken and can read a map!I love this camera.

Please try again later. Mr. JCB 2.0 out of 5 stars It badly needs to be updated and re-issued or at least issued with an addendum. In addition, the author has in some cases just reprinted sections from his E-M5 book, which results in some errors. I know because I have both books and it is a reprint word-for-word. And while true for the E-M5, it is just plain wrong for the E-M1. He also completely misses the one-touch white balance button in Chapter 9, presumably since the E-M5 doesn't have one. Oddly, he does show these two buttons on page 45 when he labels the picture of the front of the E-M1 camera. Sloppy! He needs to re-write the section on button customization to match the new E-M1 camera. While it may be forgive-able that the book has become out of date due to firmware upgrades, I can't forgive him for just being lazy and re-printing sections from previous books, especially when this practice introduces mistakes. He clearly didn't spend much time with this camera or he would have caught these obvious differences with the E-M5. Either that or he didn't spend much time writing and editing the book. I have come across some other errors too just quickly perusing the book. His discussion of firmware upgrading is totally wrong and while this method applies to most digital cameras, it does not apply to any Olympus cameras. Olympus does not release binary files to put on SD cards for firmware upgrading. They have a special program called Olympus Digital Camera Updater for updating camera and lens firmware. Once again, this is sloppy work, probably a copy and paste job from another book. On the plus side, his discussion of Working With Wireless Flash should be useful since the Olympus manual is so cryptic in this area. If you plan on using the wireless flash functionality of the camera, you may find this chapter useful. The author has expanded on this chapter from his book on the E-M5.
In fact, in general, his discussion of electronic flash which takes place over 2 chapters is very detailed. This is really the only reason I gave the book two stars instead of one star.Unfortunately, David Busch's guide to the OM-D E-M1 is the worst I've ever seen. It's full of inaccuracies, major and minor, and padded with generic photographic information that has been copied and pasted, probably from the author's other books. Unfortunately, much of this bumph is error-ridden, or Irrelevant to the excellent Olympus E-M1. There's also very little step-by-step practical guidance on setting this feature-rich camera up optimally for specific shooting situations like sports, low light photography, or macro. In short, in the race to publish the first guide available for a new and popular camera, the author and his publisher have damaged their reputations with a slap-dash effort that's badly in need of fact-checking to root out the copious errors, and a solid editing job to make it more readable and effective.Probably the best of available guides yet produced for this camera, online or published. It may only be lacking as compared to the Olympus online guide by Wrotniak as was available for the E-3.David is a great writer, knows his stuff and explains it out really well.
